If you have a relatively fast and reliable internet connection, that isn't a problem. And of course it depends how big the game is which you want to download. I earlier used the browser downloads most of the time, and it was rare for them to fail.

I originally downloaded The Witcher 3 completely with a browser (and lots of other games), no problem there. You can also check afterwards if the download was successful: for multipart installers there is the option to run integrity check before the actual installation, while with single part installers you can check that their digital signature is ok.

One thing missing with browser downloads is that it doesn't create subdirectories for the installers, in case you download several games at the same time. You need to create subdirectories yourself. The downloaders create game-specific subdirectories neatly. This doesn't matter much if you download only one or few games at a time, I guess.


However, since I wanted to download all my 1172 GOG games to my local repository, and doing that manually by downloading them with a browser or GOG Downloader or Galaxy is far too much work, I used gogrepo.py (works both in Linux and Windows, as long as you first install Python and other needed dependencies). With it downloading and keeping your whole GOG library up to date is easy, as long as you have enough hard drive space and fast enough internet, and/or don't mind waiting (it took me closer to two weeks to download my whole GOG library over a 10Mbps connection, if I recall right; downloading the English Windows version installers and extras, nothing more). Now I just download updated games, and new games I've purchased, from time to time.

gogrepo.py also has the option to run and integrity check on all your downloaded GOG game installers and extras, so that you know they are fine. It does it the best it can, e.g.
- if there is a md5sum available for the file, it checks against that.
- if it is some zip file, it tests the zip file integrity.
- if it is a non-zip file with no md5sum, then all it can check is that the filesize is correct (the file might still be corrupted for some other reason, so this isn't quite foolproof, but better than nothing).

I presume lgogdownloader has the same benefits as gogrepo, but I am unsure how to run it in Windows. Apparently it should be possible at least theoretically, but you might need to compile it for Windows yourself from the source code?

Oh, so sorry, do I have an opinion which is not yours. I don't need, or want client software. Simple. So far I have seen no benefit of this "modern" gaming which is better than it was below. And yes, it will take over. It would be interesting to see a poll of how many people use the various methods of downloading, because as soon as the balance goes heavily towards client downloads, the web browser downloads will no longer be beneficial to provide.

As for proof, no nothing solid on here, however I am not going to trust promises of anyone, shinyloot was drm free, now its a steam key seller, humble was drm free, now its key seller. Every company is pushing thief own client software, they see the benefit of requiring client connection, its becoming the preferred control method. Its quite annoying, am just going through the thousands of pc games I have and throwing out those which need or only have client software on the disc as they are worthless.

Great... but other people don't want to hear about it every chance you get. It's 2015 dude welcome to the the present, clients, achievements, ect is part of gaming. It's not going to change no matter how much you complain.

But keep preaching to deaf ears... there is no point in worrying about the unknown nor is there in spreading false info.
I believe that GOG galaxy will have potential(i am writing from it now).I see many things that is not ready yet, but if they come out soon this Client can be powerful add-on to GOG site.
But thanks for all answers, i was scared that they made Client like Steam and if this client want 1GHz ram, powerful processor will be very sad.The only reason i forget for Steam is cause every game need to be run through Steam client and for poor people like me with E8500 meet problem with Dota 2 and what a powerful game offer Steam?

So i download latest version of GOG Galaxy just to have it and see their progress, but thanks to you guys i understand that is not needed in this moment.

Good points. However, I don't believe Shinyloot or Humble Bundle even used to advertise themselves as DRM-free outlets and as such, UNLIKE GOG.com. One of GOG.com's main selling points, if not the most important one, is that their games are DRM-free. That's GOG.com's value proposition, that's what they offer that other competitors aren't even willing to fully provide, that's a differentiating factor that makes them different from their competitors. People on GOG.com are mostly buying through it simply to NOT go through the headaches of dealing with clients and DRM. In fact the video that presents Galaxy talks about how fragile games ownership is as of today, and that Galaxy is optional.

So if we suppose that because of Galaxy, GOG will tie their games into Galaxy, they will simply lose their most important competitive advantage, and for most of GOG's users, the whole point of using GOG. While I also benefit just as much from having the extras attached with every game purchase, I also benefit from the DRM-free nature of games on GOG. If they take that away, most of their user base will vanish. I myself will cease the usage of GOG if it comes to this. But thankfully, they won't come, as if it comes to that, it will be like committing suicide. That's why I don't believe Galaxy will 'take over', because Galaxy 'taking over' = suicide.

Anymore when i download through my browser, if it's a archived format or iso or something i run it through 7zip and have it test for errors. Sometimes even exe files which are just effectively extractors.

Split archives are a little more tricky, but i haven't had too much trouble with them.

In really simple terms, DRM on a game means that the game has some of your access to it restricted such as no ability to install offline, while DRM-free means that you can install games offline as much as you want and play offline as much as you want without the developers coercing you into bending to their accounts system or whatever.

Like Blizzard they want to control even your items and the most crap thing is that you can't play without commection-everything is on their servers.This is great for them cause no one can play Diablo 3 without pay for and other companies not sleep.....

Nope, you can use it to start games (but get shortcuts to start without client), use it as installer and to automatically update your games and of course if you like achievments and social things like chats you can use it for these, too.
You see the "can", there is no "have to" ;)
Patching seems pretty weird to me, when Hard West was updated from the pre-release build to actual 1.0, it wanted to download a patch of size 10.5 GB even though the entire installer was 5 GB. Then again, for patch 1.1 -> 1.2 it wanted to download 3.5 GB where the patch was again <50 MB in size.

Well, the way they buried the old downloader (new users have pretty much no way to know it even exists, unless they ask the question on these forums) is not a good sign. At least, it's not for people with weak, slow internet connexion like me (try to use the direct link to download TW3 on a 250kb/s connection. It's... something)

Installers and Patches are compressed files, Galaxy (in beta) does compare the files in the game directory with the ones on server and transfers different files just uncompressed.
