Well, I have a personal distrust of client software, and one of the big draws is that the products are drm free and straight download via browser, so to me client software is one step away from drm. I doubt GOG/Obsidian would that on purpose when it's not even the case on Steam. Either they botched it somewhere, or in case you installed one of the older versions of Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000 (which came preloaded with a lite version of the client), there might be some conflict (a similar case occurred with Crypt of the Necrodancer). See if removing the client afterwards allows the game to be played.
