He doesn't have one, and would get stabbed. Even if he did, once they threw him off the mountain, he probably wouldn't have enough time to pull the cord before hitting the wall or some rocks or something. And even so, they'd probably cut it up were he caught with one.

Congratulations, you figured it out!
Were the chief to actually stab him/bury him, they'd have to throw him off the mountain, but they can't do that because he's already buried, and were they to unbury him, that would make their statement false, meaning they'd have to stab him, but if they stab him, it's true, meaning they'd have to throw him off the mountain, but they can't do that because that'd make his statement false, meaning-
...yeah, you get the idea.
Technically your solution is valid, and I did like it, but I couldn't accept it because it wasn't exactly the "official" solution.

I always had this problem in many classes at school.
My solutions mostly were as valid as they were unorthodox and most teachers don't like people who think outside of the box at all, this ruined my grades all the time. I can only remember two teachers who actually thought alternative thinking is a good thing.
Today I live from inventing and improving things most people don't even know of.

The Puzzlemaster is understanding and gives you extra puzzle points for it, at least.
It's still kinda invalid if you think about it, though. There's no way the chief could verify this statement. The guy could similarly say "I am thinking of tacos", and there's no way whether to tell if this is true or not.

"I am always lying" is a perfect paradox and doesn't need any verification.
If he is saying the truth, than he is a liar but if this is the case, he can't say the truth.
