In quite many stores though, you can actually get a Steam key on top of the local version. I guess this is because Steam itself hands out different publishers the ability for free(?) Steam keys. This is in order to make sure the publishers get their games to Steam too.

Steam is in a position to do that to strengthen their dominating market position. GOG has done the same only selectively, e.g. for The Witcher 1-2 and certain games from other publishers.

I presume the reason GOG doesn't offer Steam keys on top of GOG versions is that they fear they'd end up like GamersGate, ie. making their own store and service irrelevant in the eyes of the publishers.

Goddamn poorfags man, if it isn't begging on forums for keys, it's whining about when the next sale is. If not that then they're probably trying to scam people on these forums for free games. Do they have any shame? I don't think so.

I remember someone on these forums once made a thread about how GOG should start a system whereby if you own a genuine disc-based copy of an old game which is re-released on GOG they should get that game for free on GOG.

We NEED steam. I personally needed to use it for years, before gog came to be. Hadn't i used steam before, i wouldn't have the URGENT NEED to have a DRM-Free service around, without obligatory patching (sometimes containing content removal, like the Vice City and San Andreas before) to latest version, etc.

I gladly repurchase here ANY title i had the bad fortune and idea to get on steam, or having bought in the past as retail. Also, we NEED steam and origin around, to REMIND us that ONLY GOG tweaks and calibrates its games for modern systems and hardware and keeps them constantly upgraded on that.

Without steam, gog wouldn't be HALF as needed or appreciated. And the competition is lovely. I LOVE getting a game here full price or for small discount, when at the same time, on steam, it is given out almost free. Voting with your wallet and getting more privileges for using the same product, is always nice, deserves every last cent.

I suppose he just hates the fact that many people blindly worship GOG without ever mentioning its many faults, and I can certainly relate to that as they are indeed obnoxious (and note that this statement is coming from a strong GOG supporter that seriously thinks Valve is the equivalent of some sort of cyber-fascism); yet, like you can often find in the Internet, he then proceeds to do the same regarding Steam like it was the only way to rebalance things, like the place needed some sort of “compensation”. Well, that doesn't work... and in the meantime, he ends up being just as annoying as those he opposes.
Still, I'm convinced he doesn't do that maliciously, it's just an exaggerate reaction to annoyers.

On the other hand, I could (but I obviously won't) name at least a couple of individuals who literally do nothing but constantly bash GOG on every single thread and glorify any kind of corporate choice Valve or others may make regardless of the situation, ignoring any point that reasonable users bring up and going out of their way to find all kinds of justifications to their statements, sometimes even by twisting words, presenting misinformation or -it's rare, but it has happened- by outright lying and deliberately writing disinformation.
The usual “GOG is the same as Steam, they can revoke your access to your content in any moment for any reason, without providing motivation” is probably the most famous example, a real classic. They are not even very clever btw, as they are easily put to silence with a simple link to GOG's user licence agreement or by naming the definition of DRM-free installer.
Their devotion and effort goes so far beyond simple fanboyism that sometimes I have sincerely asked myself if they are just troll accounts on the competition's paycheck coming here just to cause some damage, and I find really strange that almost nobody ever points them out.

While it's easy to ascribe such behaviour to people being paid shills, I hardly think that's actually the case. I think it's reasonable to believe that people can be so emotionally fervent and zealous for a given brand that they're willing to troll the competition's customers to evangelize their specific consumer preferences. Someone would even argue that it's done out of a deep-seated need to justify their own choices and convince themselves that they made the "right" choice (of game franchise, of platform, etc.).
