Hi all

I would be grateful if anyone could point me to a reliable and no frills email hosting company, preferably not web mail.

Currently I am using the web based offer from my ISP (who will go unmentioned), but am having continued reliability issues (as well as continual recaptcha nightmares) and I do not wish to tie in my email to my ISP any longer.

I have looked at Zoho. Anyone here have anything to say about them, or can recommend anything else?

I have had previously excellent recommendations on browsers from this site, hence the question.

Would Gmail count? I've had no significant reliability issues from them.

Understandable. However, since I'm from the U.S., I only know a couple that are internationally orientated. Maybe, Yahoo but I'm sure you might've already heard of them.

yandex.ru is pretty complete free service with very low ads, translated, good design, aliases, minimum on personal data asked, minimum on annoyances, lots of alternative domains (like yandex.com etc). And its pretty old and stable too.

I know that its not uk, but its something I can recommend for work and business.

Would those reasons also eliminate Microsoft's outlook.com?

Personally, I pay €1 (+25% VAT) a month for a very reliable web hosting provider who also provides (equally reliable) email hosting.

I realize Wikipedia won't give them all, but by the law of averages, your choices are limited. ProtonMail is probably your best bet, as I've actually heard of it.

I'm going to press and ask why Gmail and Outlook (though I'd never use outlook myself) are out.

My reasons for disqualifying google are this- that is the platform my ISP is using (though is not marketed as such) . I had found their interface to be not what I required, and now it is frequently unreliable, likely down to my ISP only, regardless- I wish to find a reliable alternative that does not tie me to my ISPs chosen whim.

Is it a requirement that this email service be free? If not, you could simply buy the cheapest hosting plan from any reliable hosting company (I'm sure there are plenty of local ones) which runs about $5 a month on average. Email (with unlimited addresses) comes standard with such plans. And if you happen to own a domain (also very affordable) you can have something like taffer@lazydog.com

Which city do you live in? I could look up some local providers for you, if you prefer the kind where you can actually show up at their office to shake hands. Alternatively, I would recommend SectorLink of Flint, MI. They have been extremely reliable for over a decade.

Also, if you are looking to an alternative to Google for your searches, try duckduckgo.com — they are founded on the principle of not tracking their users and although they aren't as accurate is google, usually they are reasonably accurate.

Which email clients are you using? Any other requirements, such as Exchange, storage or encryption?

I used to have mailbox.org, which is a German provider, but they offer their services to an English-speaking audience as well. They have a rather powerful web client and IMAP/POP3 support. They have aliases, contacts (CardDAV), calendars (CalDAV), spam protection and they support PGP encryption, if you want it. It costs €1 a month, which is a reasonable price IMO (with a free trial). They don’t have advertising and respect your privacy. They seem to be experienced, at least I never had any complaints about them.

I only left them, because I wanted to support ProtonMail instead. ProtonMail currently has no IMAP/POP3 support, which is why I am not suggesting them. ;-)

edit: I did not read the "no webmail" part, so ignore my suggestion.

I did set up a Proton Mail account, there is a free and a paid version. I guess as long as you do have a lot of friends and spend the day mailing back and forth, the free version should be fine. I am using the free version at the moment.

Gmail is the top #1 Free email service.
I doubt any other free services could better than it.

I also can not 100% trust Gmail/Google, so I have my own domain and my own email service.
It is not free, of course.
