I wanted to let you know that, effective today, we’ve removed the report system from our forum. It’s something that was formerly designed to enhance your forum experience, but we’ve learnt the hard way that it ultimately did the opposite to some of you, which was never our intention. While we cannot commit to bigger forum optimizations for the time being, we’ve decided to take this step in order to improve your overall experience.

Another frequently brought up topic is the post review system – we are also considering removing this feature for the time being, but would like to listen to your opinions on the matter before we commit to this measure.

hey everyone. I've read your opinions on the downvote/upvote system we had and I liked your suggestions to leave the option to upvote and remove the downvote option that unfortunately helps in spreading negativity and can be under bot attacks.

That's why, as you may have noticed, starting well, a couple of minutes ago, we've removed the option to downvote posts.

Good stuff +1 ; D
Could you elaborate on this a bit?
Is the post review system the upvote/downvote function?

While I think this is mostly a great move, do you intend to implement an alternative to report posts? Or do we have to pm a Blue should we see an extremely rude/sexist/racist etc. post?

Edit: Nevermind, my mobile phone had a hiccup, seems like you can still rate posts and mark them as spam, apparently only the rep has gone.

Shouldn't the thread have a blue LED? Would make it more visible.

I'd like to know this as well as the rate this post +/- still appears when you hover over posts..is this what is ment by post review system?
I was under an impression that reporting was defunct and I've been using "We are under attack again" thread or contacted one of GOG staffers anyway.

As for forum reputation. If you can't keep track of who's abusing downvotes then it may be better to remove it for now. But I think it still has some value as an indicator of one's behavior and actions, even if it's very far from perfect.

As long as the removal of the 'post review system' still allows the option to hide posts we do not wish to see, then I would be fine with that...

As for the 'reporting system', I would assume this would be the 'Report Spam' option one gets when negatively rating a post ?. I was under the impression that that system wasn't functional, or at least did not work as it was meant to ?.

My guess is that they went for the easiest possible fix, and the system itself is unchanged, but user reputation is just not visible publicly.
There's one question, and that's how posting links will be handled.

Well, I'll be... never thought I'd live to see the day :). I was "rep-blind" anyway, so I welcome the move. Better late than never :P.

It's the first thing that went through my mind as well... but in truth rep was never useful beyond some spambot prevention. So now it's swept under the rug, in a very youtube dislike count fashion :).

Simply keeping the report as spam option would be useful I guess, otherwise low and high rating does not really make sense "in these unprecedented times". Might as well not let bots have their fun :). There are moderators around in case things get dicey anyway. My 2 cents.

As to the posting of links & adding attachments, it could be time-based or post-count based (maybe a combination of the two?) instead of rep based.

Yeah, I would have preferred if they just fixed the rep abuse by bots, but ok..
I do wonder how the posting of links will work now here.
Can everybody post links regardless of their time here?
Or are there any limits for new users.
Well, you're now one step closer to being the best forum I've seen in literal ages.

Now all you have left to do is:
1) Strip all this worthless javascript out.
2) Turn off any social media trackers.
3) Completely rework the forum engine to better resemble the days of the BBS. KISS principle in full action. If it can be read via a NTTP feed or access via a mailing list, all the better.
4) Implement HTML WYSIWYG instead of this terrible BBcode nonsense.
5) Give us access to PNG avatars. It sucks not having support for transparency.
6) Implement actual themes instead of "half gray" and "half gray".
7) Overhaul how user replies are retrieved as to prevent the purple dot of doom and never being able to check recent posts.
8) Several users have made userscripts to improve the forums. If they can manage that with just scripting, I imagine much better can be done with access to the actual source.
9) A host of modernizations. This forum was quaint even by the standards of 2012. Inline image posts, emoticons, automods, you know things that only existed since at least...a long time ago. Before the Millennium.
10) KISS Spam prevention. We should have to worry about spam attacks happening in the first place as the solutions to prevent them are as obvious as they are unimplemented.

...And that seems like a good laundry list.

I suspect it's much more likely they'd start a new forum with a new software, than rewrite the old one. Sadly, it looks like we can't hope for either.

Thank <insert deity of choice>! Now a lot of us won't be punished simply because of downvote bots.
EDIT: NM. As usual, GoG quarterasses everything they do. The whole upvote/downvote system should've been completely removed to combat the downvote bots. At the very least, you should've at least deleted the "low rated" tag above the posts. However, at least not having a poster's negative rep listed above there name, so constant rule violators (you need to moderate your forums) can't use it as a badge of honor (I know a few but won't name them).
