bler144: Mmm...that's not quite right. Stimulated saliva does contain bicarbonate, but it's function is understood to be to neutralize acids in the mouth produced by bacteria (fighting tooth decay), rather than a primary source for offsetting the hydrochloric acid produced in the stomach lining.
It can help though, if properly stimulated.

Reflux is "digestion" of the esophageal lining, which has no natural chemical protection, since the stomach valve is supposed to be its protection. I believe that epithelium also regrows at a much slower rate (2x?), though been a while since I actually took histology.

So, sure, it can help slightly bail out a place that has relatively minimal gastric acid exposure and no other home-grown options for chemical assistance. ;)

zeogold: Did you know that without saliva, your stomach would digest itself?

Other cells in the stomach lining produce bicarbonate to help regulate stomach acidity, and also produce mucus as a physical barrier.

In any case, you actually do "digest" your stomach lining despite these buffers, it just constantly is regrowing. Provided the balance of elimination/regrowth stays in balance, you just never notice.
Shhhhh!
I said I'd disturb him, I never said I'd do it through actual facts.

Yep, yep. My point was that saliva can be quite useful for reducing acidity in certain cases. What you say is quite valid; I was just bringing up a tangential situation.

I used to have discussions like this at the dinner table throughout my childhood. Fun times, fun times. It took me until my early teens to understand that talking about draining cysts, cutting out tumorous tissue, and the like were not appropriate dinner conversation for most people. ;)

Well, it looks like Vitek is probably long abed.

Any more discussions of human anatomy/phys anyone wants to have?

I should be working on resumes in any case, but having a hard time getting going. Perhaps I'll go grocery shopping first...

We could talk about the time I interned with a orthopedic surgeon. Cauterized blood I could deal with... the smoke from drilling into bone... that took some getting used to. ;)

edit: Actually, lest someone get the wrong impression, it was more like 'shadowing' than 'interning'. This was back in high school, when I still thought I would go pre-med, and seniors at my school could shadow a person for a couple weeks towards the end of the year.

I shadowed a number of surgeons, meaning I stood in a corner of the O.R. and watched from a distance. Occasionally they would give me give me excess biopsied material or other medical waste to look at up close.

Hey!

NSFW ... even more than my usual fare.

Also, I wonder what the hold up is. I have had my Night 0 action sent in for days now. Someone must be slacking...

Wait...you mean this guy is actually right?

Heh. It would seem so - though if he's the future of humanity perhaps we're doomed anyway. ;)

Interestingly, above 150 ppm hydrogen sulfide paralyzes the olfactory nerves, and around 1000 ppm causes death.

Then again, oxygen toxicity is also possible, so pretty much everything will kill you in high doses. Except timbits.

just so you know...I almost never click on links unless I know what they lead me to. I'd probably understand you better if I ever followed your links.

which of course is a great way for you to get subtle messages to your scum-buddies without me being aware!
