my name is coole catte: Apart from my feeling that live chat is at odds with a forum game, I really don't like discord.
Personal opinions on discord aside, technically one could use QT at nearly live pace as well if everyone is on at the same time.....the major difference in pacing is mainly that the QT doesn't auto refresh.

Technically one can do the same thing with the GOG forum too, but it's still a medium that lends itself better to longer posts and a slower pace and QT is a nice analogue of that. If the mafia only have night chat I don't really mind (although I still don't like using discord), but I don't like the idea of a live daychat because of the speed mismatch.

If we're talking about QT just being nicer/better to use in your eyes(length/formatting/pace), I can get behind that.

If it's due to possible "unfairness", I somewhat disagree(with that being a reason to not use discord for such games in general).....if we go with discord chats being unfair then we could possibly also go with things like the skill level of players being unfairly balanced, etc as making the game possibly or actually unfairly balanced to one side.

In case I wasn't clear, I meant it as alternative for quicktopic, not to play the game there (we all know GOG forum is great on technical side it can never be replaced by anything better).

I've never used Discord for chatting and I don't even know what exactly it can do. I've only used it to get some links for mods so I supposed even if it is live chat the posts persist. I know it is popular and QT is not the most up-to-date system so I wondered if people would perhaps prefer Discord as better and not so dated alternative for observing and scumchatting.
To be honest, I don't even know if it can be used the same way, I just assumed.

Why do you dislike discord so much, catte?

It can be used for text chat, picture posting, video posting, etc.....it's pretty nice for various things.

That said, some dislike it for scumchats/other mafia game chats as it is hard on the eyes to read sometimes(when reading after a game). Also some like Catte seem to be against it as they (if I read their posts right) feel it an unfair advantage if it's 24/7 chat, due to it being near instant PM-like chat.

Don't worry, you were clear. I just don't like the idea of replacing QT with live chat.

Smells funny.

I don't know really, I think I just have an aversion to chatrooms. I never really warmed to IRC either.

Well now we know who we're hosting a chatroom warming party for in the future. We can get e-balloons and e-streamers and everything. :D

Same here. Any live chat is a no-no for me, if the main game is running on a forum.
Either everything is on a forum, or everything is in live chat.

Just curious: How do you feel in general (not for this upcoming game) about games having a side observer chat on such sites?
(seeing as observers cannot influence the game and all)

I don't feel anything about observers.
I'm with the anti-discord crowd.

As a player, I look forward to reading observer chat when I die / when the game ends, to read back how certain key moments were commented upon from outside. Having to do that on discord would make me sad.
i like discord but i want the observer thread to stay in a format accessible to all without requiring logging in, and where i don't have to scroll to the top of the channel and then guess what applies to what.

That said, 1 "gog mafia" server with one new channel per game, wouldn't be too bad, so long as none of the current players checked it.... (you could jump to the top of the channel to start reading) The biggest issue would be making sure that the current players aren't reading it.

while i love discord, QT overall does a much better job of keeping non-invited players out IMO.

I also agree the main observer thread should be in a format that's easy to "digest" for all players.

That said, I just want to point out(to only point it out in case anyone didn't know): one thankfully doesn't need an account to use a discord channel/server...it depends on the way the server is setup, afaik.

Just checking: couldn't anyone with the link read it, just like with open discord servers?

(I believe that's the case for most previous mafia observer QTs)

Yes, anyone with the link can read it--but you do need a discord account to join any server. AFAIK, there are no "public" discord servers that can be accessed without an account, unlike QT.

Also, my mental idea would be "one server with one new observation channel and one new mafia channel per game", which would require the admin to not allow certain users the rights to read certain channels--this would mean the mafia channel would ONLY be allowed to certain users, and the observation channel would either be allowed to everyone or ONLY to those who request it.

It would be easy to ping the first post in the channel to access later.

You're right....I now recall that I was thinking of people joining servers without a registered account, using just a guest account(which doesn't need registration).
