I think Russian Roulette games should have a bigger proportion of mafia, than regular Mafia games.

Scum have a major disadvantage compared to regular Mafia: no night kill. And the small extra advantage they have (day chat) doesn't offset it.

Look at it this way, once I was dead my partner, even if he played a perfect game, would at best get a 50% winning chance (when he and a town player are left it's 50-50). If dedo was my partner, then his gutsy play would have secured a 50% winning chance and that's assuming he was lock town and no one would have taken a swing at him before.

I think that with the current 75%-25% Town to Mafia distribution, town can get a greater than 50% chance of winning just by shooting randomly (without self-shooting). I'll do a proper mathematical analysis if I have some spare time.

The big problem with a larger Mafia team is that Mafia can dogpile townies with no chance of accidentally targeting their own. I'm not sure how to best balance it; I considered adding a third mafia member for my game, but then mafia only needed a few misfires before they can just start gunning people down.

As demonstrated here, one of the things the Mafia team can do is help Town eat itself (even if Mafia's only strategy in that regard is just shutting up).

Yeah, even three mafia gives them a lot of power considering there are 6 chambers in the gun. A few dead town at the start and the game already belongs to the mafia. I think you have to accept that the nature of the game is always going to be swingy though, because you've replaced the votes with dice rolls. :P

How about increasing the chamber size then? Or make it variable: chamber size = number of live players?

The latter one is a good idea, but I would modify it to Nr. of living players +1. Otherwise it will screw the end-game a bit.

Or we could drop the chamber size entirely and just have every shot succeed with a 1/6 chance. The mod would just have to roll a die after each shot and on a 6 the gun fires.

That works, and it wouldn't mess with the fact that they're prerolled since you know there's going to be one less chamber each round. :D

This somewhat ties into a conversation I was having with Bookwyrm last night. We were talking about the ABBAAB shooting pattern you guys adopted at the end. Bookwyrm reckoned it conferred a statistical advantage to have two shots in a row, but I'm of the opinion that it would have only given a statistical advantage if each shot was individually rolled. With a predetermined single bullet location, the decision to take a single or double shot is more a strategic one about guessing where the bullet is.

Mathematically it doesn't matter. It's 50-50 regardless of whether you decide to take 2 bullets in a row or just one.

There is still strategy involved of whom to shoot at.

Regardless, for me at least, unlike regular mafia, Russian Roulette is more of a fun random-shoot game... And one of these days I'll actually get to shoot at another player, instead of myself.
