Goldberg Steam Emulator and the Atom's Steamless software works ~65% from my small sample of ~20 titles, and I rescued 12, left with 8 out of which 4 that GoG Galaxy is preparing a future package for sale (WH40K DoW). The others are: Shadows of War, Dungeons 3, Train Simulator Classic & TSW.
Use steamless first, if it manages to remove the DRM, executable should now work, you can copy the game do a different folder and uninstall from steam. If not, copy 1 - 4 DLLs the Emulator provides (2 main or 4 experimental) depending on how many you find in the game's folder. Rename, do not replace, just in case it doesn't work, and run to see if it works. Again if it did work, relocate your working game and make new shortcuts for all.
Now if only someone can do the same for EA, Ubisoft, Uplay, still have a few titles I need rescued from there also. My Launcher Free gamer project will be near completion.

I'm not sure that giving instructions on how to crack games will be looked kindly upon by the gods of gOg moderation....

I am NOT cracking games, these are MY GAMES, you have to have the legitimate DRM steam install to use either of those to FREE your own game. STEAM is in Breach of Contract since the first change to their TOS/EULA.

You edited the executable to bypass client checks the devs themselves put in to integrate their work into Steam's platform.

But I agree, I've been doing that since my first CD games. While we basically are not allowed to modify our games, no one really cares. That rule is very vague anyway, it would not even allow to overwrite sound files or textures.

There are laws specifically around the circumventation of protection mechanisms (DRM).

As far as I know, there is no law outright preventing you from modifying the textures of a copy of game you own any more than there's a law from modifying a painting you bought or carving a vinyl record you bought. I suppose an EULA might try to forbid it, and it might be unenforceable depending on jurisdiction.

As long as the DMCA applies to your country then you are covered for the scenario for then the DRM stops working due to the OS or hardware no longer allowing it to work or a remote server can no longer be contacted (Not because it's down for maintenance, you unplugged the cable, or didn't pay the Internet bill) since they can no longer "effectively control" or "effectively protect" the "complete game". You can circumvent the DRM as well as "traffic" the tool to do so as per the DMCA.

With that said forums don't don't need to abide by that so if a forum decided to remove such content then you'll know how the forums stand so just don't visit that forum anymore and take your money elsewhere.

With the rise of handheld PCs, one may often have no choice but to crack their older CD games, since there's no optical disc reader. If those CDs are legitimately purchased, then cracking them is no different than modding Skyrim at this point. Heck in the case of GTA 3, the community patch itself ends up removing the DRM, so there no need to even look for a dedicated crack lol.

I own a lot of older disc-based DRM games that are perfect for relatively low-powered handheld PCs. Many of those are no longer for sale digitally, or never have been. I am certainly not going to abandon them, especially since some of the disc-based DRM becomes incompatible with newer versions of Windows. In these cases cracks are helping preserve game history.

I direct your attention to the Forum Code of Conduct, notably: It doesn't matter if you're cracking it for your own use, the moment you altered it you cracked the game. You're not supposed to be posting that here. Nor are you supposed to promote the behaviour here.

You didn't pay for it. You paid Steam for access to it. There is a vast difference in that logic, legally. You knew this when you agreed to the subscriber agreement. They present it to you before purchase.

To be fair, no one said you are stealing. It is a crack however, cracking a games has nothing to do with a moral code. But no need to defend it towards me, I totally agree that I do with my games as I please :)

Btw, we have cracked games here on GOG as well.
The CD check in Dark Forces for example was never disabled. Instead the game gets fooled into thinking that the CD is in the drive by putting a file in a certain location. This is not a data file moved to the hard disk for faster access, but an ID file which the game uses to detect the CD, it has no other purpose. Fooling that mechanism is a crack by definition ... and GOG (and also Steam) sells it, Disney is ok with it (edit: or doesn't know or bother).

Feel free to report the thread. In the past I could talk about cracking my CD games without being prosecuted, so I guess it's not forbidden.
