Tekkaman-James: Clearly, I need to re-watch Iron-Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World because I honestly don't remember them being that funny/silly. I'm not denying your claim, I just legitimately can't confirm it either.
All I remember from Iron Man 3 is the usual quips and funny little moments, there to distract us from the core PTSD story. The same thing they did with Guardians of the Galaxy for all their personal tragedies. I'm on my phone so I can't watch the trailer right now.
That being said, I hate magic in movies. They turn it into a simple "you move your hands like this and say these words and the desired outcome happens". They turn it into a science almost, and it loses all its wonder and, well, magic.
I wished that a movie, maybe Doctor Strange, did for magic what Paprika did with dreams. Make it surreal and otherwordly, where anything can happen, bring back the wonder.
I've since accepted this movie will just be people hurling pewpewpew beams at each other, which can be entertaining in its own right.
Then again people in this discussion have likened the trailer to Inception, that movie was inspired by Paprika, even if it wasn't nearly as surreal, maybe this movie will be more like I hoped it to be than I expected.
I guess I'll find out when I get home and watch the trailer.

JMich: Nope, that is Professor Strange who is employed as a doctor. And not sure if a Psychiatrist is considered a doctor or not, though I guess it depends on whether you ask the psychiatrist or a surgeon.
Well I know he is Professor Hugo Strange but IMDB in Arkhamverse calls him Dr. Hugo Strange. :P doctorsinister: They changed the gender of The Ancient One to a woman.
Why ?
Say what you want about DC movies but at least they don't do this political correctness crap of changing race, color, gender of highly important characters in their movies.
Someone gave a official explanation for this last year. Why ?

I can't remember it. But he can make people to do that.

It wasn't actually funny, but Thor 2 attempted it in just about every scene with Dr Selvig (who for some reason remains in his underpants for most of the film) and his assistents, also it had that absurdity with the hammer flying around through the portals, and eventually the Norse God of thunder taking the London Underground to Greenwich (via a completely incorrect route). Some people may have found that amusing, I'm pretty sure it wasn't to amp up the tension.

Is Jimmy Olsen an important character ? No.
These are side characters, their actions, life or death in the movies has no effect on the storyline or on the psych of comic fans.
Ancient One is a pivotal character in Doctor Strange comics.

I'd say those are the mainstays of pretty much everything Superman-related. Like J. Jonah Jameson to Spider-Man or Commisioner Gordon to Batman. Is Jimmy Olsen an important character ? No.
And it didn't bother me about Perry White being black, it does not matter or make any less or more sense than him being white. Unlike Heimdall in Thor (and I liked that movie) being black- having a african-asgardian norse god was just silly and really took me out of the movie when he was on screen.
As for the Ancient One, I don't know the character at all (I never followed Doctor Strange in comics outside of his appeariances in some crossovers), so I can't be very bothered by the change. I guess the fans will just have to wait and see how important the change actually turns out to be for the story.

Watched the trailer now. Meh. It really seemed very generic. Lots of "blam" sounds and random "very meaningful sayings".
I didn't see any pewpewpew lasers shooting out of anyone's hands which is good, but on the other hand I saw very little magic at all. What I did see, like the multiple planes of the city, really wasn't all that impressive for me. Same goes for some of the other environments, which reek of the actor standing in a 3mx3m area in front of a green screen while we just animate stuff around them.
I was more excited for this than Civil War, still looking forward to it. Now I'm hoping the movie's better than what was shown here. It has the potential to be.

jefequeso: It might be a cultural thing. At least, the western view of the world tends to value things being quantifiaible, and things having utility. So in entertainment, there's a feeling that everything has to be explained in psuedo-scientific terms, or at least understood in psuedo-scientific ways. So everything has a definite purpose and definite rules that can be clearly understood and utilized. Which I agree takes a lot of the magic and wonder out of certain things (including life itself, but that's another subject). Inception is a great example. I like the movie quite a bit, but it does utterly fail to capture the "dreaminess" of dreams. Instead it's focuses on rulesets and psuedo-science. It's never willing to let things be inexplicable, or let things function/behave in a way that can't be easily explained/understood.
I haven't thought about it in cultural terms, I figured it was just turning magic into an easily understandable and digestible concept for the lowest common denominator consumer. Your assumption is far less cynical than mine, and thinking about it, you might indeed be right. I do think even in western culture there are ways to better marry the two concepts, if the author puts his mind to it. I like the school of magic where you learn a thing's true name in order to have power over it. It still has the same "easily reproducible experiment" feel, but it does make different parts of nature, like the wind or the rain, feel like entities onto themselves, with proper names, and with whom you must commune and acquaint yourself in order to gain the honor of learning its true name. Ultimately, I guess it's just up to the author to not trivialize his own world.
As for Inception, I think that's just Christopher Nolan's style, he's a very rational filmmaker who's very good at making movies about rational people making plans and putting them in motion, and that's just what he did with Inception. The result was a good movie, but maybe not quite as dreamlike as it could've been.
Have you watched Paprika? I thought it was a great movie and it did this very well. It had this way of editing down space and time. You'd see a waiter arrive with drinks, cut straight to the characters in the middle of a toast. It reminded me of when you dream you are in one place and must go somewhere else, then arrive there, even though you don't remember the journey inbetween. It felt very dreamlike at times.

Stan Lee ?
The Ancient One is supposed to be to Doc Strange what Morpheus was to Neo. A charismatic mentor.
Tilda Swinton just doesn't have that charisma.

This seems like another really bad casting decision similar to Jesse Eisenberg playing Luthor in Batman v Superman. Why ?

Looks like a movie I will enjoy watching. How it goes from looking exactly like batman to the matrix to inception is inhibiting much of my excitement, pretty weak from those involved there. Benedict Cumberbatch seems to be doing a fine job of it.
