I miss Firefly too. It was a great show, one of my all-time favorites.
It makes me glad to see the cast finding success afterward. There isn't a lot to talk about there, mainly Nathan Fillion and Morena Baccarin. Ron Glass had success before Firefly - Barney Miller of course. Anyone ever see the Twilight Zone episode called I of Newton?

Firefly was a very good show and one of my co-workers pointed out that when it debuted on its channel, it was doomed from the start. However, it was again picked up and shown again and there was (as another pointed out) the movie "Serenity" which was based on the series and pretty good.

One of the main reasons firefly failed (besides Fox being a bunch of dumb asses) was because they aired the shows out of order. If you watch them on Netflix or buy the DVD's they are in order, but when they were originally shown they were out of order and hard to follow

That's exactly how it was explained to me.

Firefly was cool. I actually saw Serenity first; a pal mentioned it had a bit of a Pilot to a series feeling to it. Only after then I discovered Firefly :P

That cast & crew got the chance to wrap the story up with a movie was very awesome and also gives reason to buy the series since its now concluded.

amok: Defiance?

it is not space opera, though.
avatar
Niggles: Im a fan of scifi but that one isnt that good -- it wasnt helped it had a MMO named after it running at the same time (it was very generic...)
avatar
nightcraw1er.488: Was fortunate enough to record the whole series of Firefly the other day, seen it a few times but not recently. Its such a shame that it was cancelled, is one of the best sci-fi shows, up there with b5, tng/strek, Farscape. From the intro song, great actors, superb story, and the western feel it all just works. I don't suppose anyone has heard any new news about the show? Any recommendations on something similar? Not seen anything recently that interests me sci-fi.
avatar
Niggles: Dark Matter & The Expanse are two ive recently seen. Opinions divided on Dark Matter but Expanse is excellent :)
I liked Defiance.

After hearing that its done (thankfully with an ending) I checked out the MMO. Its a solid TPP open world shooter. Nicely catches the atmosphere of the show but a bit lousy on some MMO core stuff. Fun for an occasional romp lack too much to get lost into the life of an digital alter ego.

I'm one of those who enjoyed Firefly a lot but hated Serenity. For some reason I liked Dark Matter too, was in the right suspend disbelief mood I guess, looking forward to another season (it's season, not series to you brits!!). It's a pity there aren't more niche adventure (and pre-defined length!) sci-fi series as those mainstream things always cut quality writing and acting in favor of broadening the appeal.

Tarm: What hooked me from the start was the superb interaction between the characters (Great humour.) and the exploration. They just fit together and exploration and mystery have always been something that strongly draws me in. For example I love Star Trek much because of this.
Couple this with what you said and also ancient stuff to unearth (Love it. The ancient the better. :D )SG1 just clicked with me.

Atlantis was the same in a somewhat lesser format so that is very high up on my favourite TV shows list. :)
Yeah it felt like they got cancelled and made a story arc to end it that was thought out before hand. It certainly wasn't a bad end. Open ended isn't always bad.

Universe felt out of place. Like a story made for another "universe" altered to fit in with the Stargate one. It lacked most of what I liked in the other Stargate shows.

Do get the DVDs if you can. I'm thinking about buying them again before I manage to wear down the ones I have...

adaliabooks: Yeah, the combo of Jack, Daniel, Sam and Teal'c is one of the best on TV. They played off each other brilliantly. And the storylines were always great (and they at least made an attempt at explaining why every planet was populated by humans who spoke English :))
Jack particularly was brilliant, the bond that grew between him and Daniel and his love for Sam were always well done.

Atlantis was great too, Shepherd and Rodney were hilarious together, though I never really liked many of the other characters (the original Doctor was quite good).
That being said, the cross over they did with Teal'c and Ronan was epic XD

I do like Star Trek too, but it's never quite grabbed me as much as Stargate did (though I did used to watch Voyager and DS9 quite a lot, probably seen most of both series)

Yeah, I completely agree. It felt like they were trying to make something else (or what they thought would be popular) and just shoehorned it into the Stargate universe in the hopes the SG1 fans would all follow over and watch it.
I completely agree with everything you say except with Star Trek but that's just different tastes I think. :)

Sometimes I even watch SG1 sort of as a drama/humour show. It's like watching Friends where the story takes second place.
Not to say that the writing is bad. The stories is one of SG1s strengths. Some of the arcs wasn't 100% hits but the story parts of the arcs compensated for that.
avatar
Tarm: SG1 is my favourite TV Series ever. Not the best but the one I like the most. :)
It certainly didn't end on a low point. Which is both sad and a relief.

Universe I never liked. Too much drama for me.
avatar
darthspudius: Ah, I liked it for the drama. Atlantis was fun but a bit too tacky. Universe just had a completely different groove which was nice.
I'm not much for drama in scifi or fantasy either for that matter. I watch those genres for their other qualities. I want my drama grounded in reality. :)
avatar
Tarm: Wait what it got cancelled? I was waiting for it to end so I could have a marathon!
Please tell me it got a conclusion and didn't end with a huge cliffhanger or something.
avatar
sunshinecorp: Defiance was cancelled but didn't end with a cliffhanger. In fact the ending was quite satisfying.
I keep getting reminded of that. I'll take that as a sign to watch it as soon as I can. ;)
avatar
Niggles: Will there ever be another season of Almost Human?
avatar
Breja: No, but you can watch the previous show with the same basic concept, Total Recall 2070. Funny enough, it's actually much more inspired by Blade Runner than Total Recall. It also got cancelled after the first season, but that one season is well worth a watch.
Total Recall 2070 is better than the usual scifi shows and I was sad when it got cancelled. That one could have been great if it had a couple seasons more.

Wolfehunter: I enjoyed Firefly. Serenity even more. Sucks that it was canceled. Something similar happened to Space above and beyond. Great series shut down by A-holes who don't understand what fans want. Why I try to avoid watching new shows.. tired of getting hooked on a good series to be blueballed by the producers.
I seriously loved that show. One of very few scifi shows that was centered around War as a theme with actual war stories and not just the standard stories adapted to a war setting. This one thing makes so much difference it's insane there aren't more shows like that.
The interaction is also very good in this one. Damn it the Space: Above and Beyond cancellation is one of the saddest for me. :(
Hm, never saw Firefly. Did see Serenity and liked it quite a lot. Might need to look in to the series then.

As for Defiance. Season 1 was perfect and after that the story arc wen't down hill fast and the series died.

Dark Matter definitely is very interesting and I can't wait for season 2. It really surprised me who the traitor was at the end of the season although there was some kind of implication that it might be him.

Expanse is very well done (probably one of most professional sci fi series in longtime) and follows the storyline from the books more or less. Can't wait for next book in the series and more tv episodes.

I don't know if you watched Babylon 5. That one was one epic space series and would recommend it very much.

Sadly most sci fi shows get canceled prematurely like Terranova which was just starting to get really interesting when they killed it.

Yep, I got the collectors box set of b5, great series, the poignant g'ka/lando part at the end for instance is a great twist.

Niggles: Almost Human -- it got impression near the end it felt a bit short imho.... i liked it to that point.
I guess it was already looking pretty cancelled before the season was finished. So maybe that explains a lot.
Im a huge Firefly/Star Trek/Star Wars/B5 fan but the Expanse has me hooked. The whole universe seems very fleshed out and alive compared to some others i've seen.

I've seen the first episodes of both Killjoy and Dark Matter...

meh to both of them.

Have you seen any episodes of "Red Dwarf"? Another interesting series I found browsing my Roku one afternoon was Space Janitors.

The scene where you hear the sound of a "light saber" battle going on overhead and an arm falling on the floor that one of the janitors picks up in episode 3 got me laughing.

Both are hilarious, although Red Dwarf's old classic sitcom episodes are better than the newer ones. However, they're not what you'd usually expect from SciFi. It's rather SciFi themed comedy.
