Firefly was a great show. Add it to the list of great shows that were cancelled. Stargate got cancelled when it got its second wind. What a waste.

nightcraw1er.488: Was fortunate enough to record the whole series of Firefly the other day, seen it a few times but not recently.
NVM, I just saw someone already mentioned Serenity.

As far as series go, I haven't come across anything similar since. It's sorely missed.

Tarm: But still a cliffhanger I gather.
Damn! Another promising show I probably wont watch then. :(

amok: it was mostly resolved, but with probabilities of continuation
Oh. That actually sounds alright. I'll be getting it then.

Which Stargate show do you mean?

SG1 or Universe, take your pick haha. They were running a great story arc but nope, cancelled.

nightcraw1er.488: Any recommendations on something similar? Not seen anything recently that interests me sci-fi.

Breja: There's an old-ish british show Blake's 7 that also has a rag-tag group of outlaws as the main characters. It's really well written, and the acting and characters are superb, but to enjoy it you need to be able to ignore some of the cheapest old tv special effects and sets you'll ever see in sci-fi. I don't really mind it, so I liked it a lot. It's sort of a grand-daddy of Farscape, Firefly and Andromeda, and a evil twin to the original Star Trek (there is an evil Federation, to future of Earth is bleak and totalitarian).
Ha, yes, I am well aware of all the old Sci-fi. I grew up watching these, DrWho, Time Tunnel, The Invaders ad infinitum. But where's the new good stuff, too much pouting at cameras and millions on special effects.

Isn't that still going? I thought they were on to Stargate Atlantis now. It started off with promise (the original Stargate), and was ok. The replicants ruined it for me though, and Thor.

SG1 is my favourite TV Series ever. Not the best but the one I like the most. :)
It certainly didn't end on a low point. Which is both sad and a relief.

Universe I never liked. Too much drama for me.
I'll throw in a mention for Dark Matter. I quite enjoyed it even if I never really understood why. :P It looks set for a second season alongside Killjoys.

Really tried to like Killjoys, but it is so hopelessly low budget and preposterous even my desperately suspended disbelief caved in all too quickly.

amok: not a big one...

Defiance was concluded. I suppose they could have done a new series, but it would need a whole new storyline. It's well worth watching.

I'm convinced. It's added to my DVD buy list. :)

Good call. It starts off well and manages to get better into the second season. Just don't expect the back story to the global situation to make much sense right away.
I fell asleep on the second episode and never gave it another try. Just not my cup of tea.

Me too. I absolutely adore SG1 (and Atlantis too), it's the perfect blend of action and humour (with a reasonably decent and well explained mythology).

Never liked Universe though, it just didn't feel anything like the previous shows. A bit too dark and grim and without the links to ancient history the other shows had.

But unfortunately all of them got cut short (Atlantis ended on a sort of cliff hanger too as I remember, somewhat resolved but with definite hints of more that should have come)

I'm still waiting for a sci fi show that fills that gap (or to be able to afford the £100 odd it costs to get all of Stargate on DVDs)

Oh that wont bother me as long as it starts to make sense sometime. Thanks for the hint that it will.

amok: Defiance?

it is not space opera, though.
Im a fan of scifi but that one isnt that good -- it wasnt helped it had a MMO named after it running at the same time (it was very generic...)

nightcraw1er.488: Was fortunate enough to record the whole series of Firefly the other day, seen it a few times but not recently. Its such a shame that it was cancelled, is one of the best sci-fi shows, up there with b5, tng/strek, Farscape. From the intro song, great actors, superb story, and the western feel it all just works. I don't suppose anyone has heard any new news about the show? Any recommendations on something similar? Not seen anything recently that interests me sci-fi.
Dark Matter & The Expanse are two ive recently seen. Opinions divided on Dark Matter but Expanse is excellent :)

What hooked me from the start was the superb interaction between the characters (Great humour.) and the exploration. They just fit together and exploration and mystery have always been something that strongly draws me in. For example I love Star Trek much because of this.
Couple this with what you said and also ancient stuff to unearth (Love it. The ancient the better. :D )SG1 just clicked with me.

Atlantis was the same in a somewhat lesser format so that is very high up on my favourite TV shows list. :)
Yeah it felt like they got cancelled and made a story arc to end it that was thought out before hand. It certainly wasn't a bad end. Open ended isn't always bad.

Universe felt out of place. Like a story made for another "universe" altered to fit in with the Stargate one. It lacked most of what I liked in the other Stargate shows.

Do get the DVDs if you can. I'm thinking about buying them again before I manage to wear down the ones I have...

Quite surprised and liked it a lot. Hope there will be a few seasons coming for it. The current scifi landscape isnt exactly stellar (Expanse aside)

nightcraw1er.488: Yes, there was a film, it was ok. You would have thought with a film it would give them impetus to do another series, but no.

amrit9037: I liked Almost Human,
Will there ever be another season of Almost Human?
