Financial aid is based on the income of the parents. Most 19 year olds don't have a steady stream of income or a credit history. This is a normal part of the process. Plus, if you are a veteran (depending on when you served), your daughter could be eligible to use VA benefits for her education. If you're worried about co-signing any student loans, I don't think you'll be required to. (I may be wrong about that). Be sure to talk about loans with your daughter, and that she understands what she's getting into. Explore the idea of community college or technical school. Also, it might not be a bad idea for your daughter to wait a couple of years before going to college.

tinyE: The Escort is gone too.
Be grateful. Owning a Ford Escort is tantamount to having negative net assets. Did you have to pay someone to take it off your hands?

PaterAlf: For example children have to support their parents when they are old and need care.
Actually, that's not universally true. In the US, for instance, it's only required in 28 states, and those laws are apparently rarely enforced.
Now days school doesn't really help you get a job anyways, unless she's going to become an engineer, doctor or lawyer. Save the debt and just hit the job market!

adaliabooks: For example you could have an unemployed 18 or 19 year old whose parents are millionaires, why should they get aid when their parents can clearly afford to put them through it?
Perhaps because the person's parents don't actually care about their child and are completely unwilling to pay for her education? (I am talking about abusive/narcissistic parents here.)

I was writing about Germany. Don't know about the situation in the USA.

paladin181: Why is the financial aid of an adult person who is legally allowed to vote and stand on her own in any other way based on my income? That would be like basing my financial aid on the income of my adult neighbor. And my daughter has the drive of a wet cardboard box, unfortunately. I won't co-sign on anything until she shows me the ability to work hard and overcome some adversity. Too much quit in her right now.
Been there, done that.

What I learned back then (several years ago) is that the "gubbermint" view of financial aid (from them) is that - basically, everyone is supposed to pay their own way through - and parents are expected to be a part of that paying.

Hence, before they issue aid, they need to ensure the parents are "doing their fair share" of helping the kids through college.

That's why the ask for some much info from you, while the aid is for her.

I'm not saying I agree or disagree with that notion; but I think that basically answers your question ("Why is the financial aid of an adult person who is legally allowed to vote and stand on her own in any other way based on my income?")

Unless Bernie (or maybe Hillary) gets elected, I would not expect that to change.

Seeing if posting this message will unbreak the topic. (I can't be the most recent poster because of the reply, so the posts shouldn't be merged.)

Purple? Aha.

Yup, you had to pay someone to take it off your hands. :-p

As I recall, someone only needs to click on "reply" to you for you to get a notification. It's possible they then deleted the quote.

Did you have the fluffy dice in the windscreen, or worse still names on the windscreen?
The whole idea is to see if she can receive financial support from her family instead of the state, assuming you would want to help her if you could.
And it can suck pretty bad. I had almost 50% of my in-state tuition paid for via scholarships that were denied to me b/c my step-father who was in the process of divorcing my mother made too much money.

Since your daughter has little drive to work hard, I would recommend that she gets into the military. They'll pay for her college and they'll teach her the drive to succeed.
lol
At my place rich people put their most of money outside in tax heaven countries.
Most of them are ministers and have even citizenship of European nations, United States and Canada which they never mentioned in public.
