dtgreene: 3. The game has lots of high-level content, but the game is not balanced at high levels. In particular, any attack that isn't Quick Hit with a Celestial Weapon (those ultimate weapons that require mini-games) fails to have any strategic use at that point, as physical attacks scale faster than offensive magic. Furthermore, even if an enemy has high defense, Celestial Weapons ignore it, making offensive magic use not even have that possible niche.

a4plz: Very knowledgeable analysis. FFX was one of the first games that got me thinking about proper handling of end-game content, because it could've been improved in so many ways that the developers were seemingly oblivious to.
I could point out that it is still quite difficult to balance RPG systems at high levels. Consider the Disgaea series; the post-game isn't always the most balanced. (Disgaea 3 and 4, to my understanding, were especially bad; the game would reach the point where every hit is a one-hit kill, making HP and DEF useless.) Or take D&D 3e with the Epic Level Handbook: balance breaks down to the point where people don't actually play at those levels that much, and by the time you reach level 100, there's pretty much no balance left. (I mentioned in another thread that, at level 4000, a 1% level difference can mean the difference between almost always and almost never hitting. Disgaea is fortunately not *that* bad.)

Going back to FFX, one other issue is that, by the time you reach post-game, bosses (which are the entirity of the post-game content) are immune to pretty much everything they can be immune to. This makes entire categories of abilities (such as status effects) entirely useless. I want spells like Sleep and Death to be useful.

Another issue with the FFX post-game is that it's all bosses. There are many interesting possibilities with dungeon/random encounter design that are basically unused because there are no dungeons that are intended to be a challenge to characters with 3-digit stats and 5-digit HP. (Speaking of which, the damage limit seems rather arbitrary, and I don't like the fact that one specific ability (Break Damage Limit) becomes mandatory at high levels.)

By the way, is there a video of Penance being defeated without celestial weapons? How about one that uses only magic? (Of note, I prefer videos where Break HP limit is used to those where it isn't; I find it more interesting from a health management perspective.)
No! Fuck you! Fuck your story, it sucks! Someone help me! Send help!
Great and all... but call me when they do an HD port of Einhander and Bushido Blade.
I have the PS2 versions of both games so i won't waste my money for those "HD" versions on PC. :D

snowkatt: hated ff 10 so i wil skip this

dtgreene: Out of curiosity, what didn't you like about ff 10?
a lot
i hated the story
the characters
the ridicilous character design
the voice acting was diabolical
blitzball was awful
the upgrade system was bullshit

but the worth thing of all it was a full year late in europe
it was released in late 2002
square had a year to optimize the game and it WAS still letterboxed and still ran slower
and it retailed for 75 euro

and that was just the final insult for how fucking awfull the game was
the moment i heard wakka talk i took the dvd out of my ps2 and made it fly

Because maybe GOG will get a clue at some point.

yeah ?
and what if square refuses to play ball ?
its not always gog's fault ( usually it is but not always ) and so far square hasnt been interested in publishing any of their own library on gog
just eidos

and all their pc ports of final fantasy are on steam

Could genuinely be Square's fault, but I'm assuming that it's GOG's because -- as you said, it usually is.

Though I do have a tough time believing that Squeenix, despite being a pretty traditional JP company, is completely oblivious to the performance of the Eidos catalog on GOG. They must realize there's a market opportunity.

dtgreene: 2. Some of the ultimate weapons require playing mini-games that, aside from not belonging in an RPG in the first place, are way too hard. Mini-games should *not* be harder than the main game, ever. Also, this creates an accessibilty issue for people with certain types of disabilities.
I skipped Wakka's ultimate weapon because those stupid blitzball tournament back then also the thunder challenge. the rest challenges just fine in my opinion.
Great news!! I can't say good of X-2, but X is one of my fondest memories of the PS2 era... I purchased it for my Vita some time ago but only (re)played the beginning, so good loooking textures... Ah well, here goes my money, probably on day 1 from GMG with their voucher, as the others went... :P
FFX/X-2 HD is out today on Steam. It's currently retailing for $29.99 and has a 20% off launch discount making it $23.99 for today.

You can read up on everything the steam version contains here.

I liked the phrase: "Just remember that every blitzer knows: when you’ve got the ball, you gotta score! "

Except it is better to get the ball and hide near your goalie)))
Just like with IX, I can wait for it to be on GOG... yeah, I know.

In any case I've read a rumour that the framerate is capped, could anyone confirm it?
