ReynardFox: Ack, unless you have a very slow PC, don't use ZSNES! Move to an emulator that actually does justice to the original console. Using ZSNES in 2015 is like browsing the internet today with IE6.
Heh, figures. It's actually been years since I've emulated anything, so certainly stands to reason that there have been significant improvements since then.

Oh have they! ZSNES has turned into the butt of many jokes in recent years. If you ever decide to get back into it, start at least at Snes9x. It's a comfortable emulator to work with.

But seriously, it's a bad suggestion for someone who hasn't emulated anything in a long time or ever. RetroArch requires a ton of configuration to get to your liking. You can do amazing things with it once you've gotten used to it, but it's not the best place to start.

Retroarch's GUI has simplified massively in recent months, especially in the nightly builds. Also, you can download the cores easily now. They're currently working on a mouse driven GUI and have one based on the mobile UI too. The old checkered green UI is out. As of current versions they're using an XMBC/KODI style menu. Not much hard to that.

As for CRT filters, I was born in 1991 so by the time I was playing NES and SNES, TVs weren't so crap any more and I don't get the raving over the bulging scanline filters.
Lightning Returns: FF XIII comes today. I'm expecting it to be not so solid port once again but at least it's getting a release finally. Took a bit too long and I still have to wait many hours. When does it end!

I haven't played that so I don't know how do I feel about it yet but I did like FF XIII-2. So at least I can now finish the nonsensical story. =)

Finish the story? I couldn't even finish XIII by itself, looking at all these sequels.... puff, really not interested.

I didn't care much about XIII too but the sequel was much more enjoyable and not so linear tunnel.
XIII was indeed quite a chore to finish.
Any hope for GOG release?
Other FFs have been available on Steam for months, and at no point Square has shown any interest to bring them here.

bansama: Chances of these coming to GOG are very slim given we can't even buy them on Steam in Japan. In addition to that, Square are using Steam's ability to lock playing to certain IP ranges (so games can only be played in certain countries).
Yeah, sadly that's my impression too. It's not probably we have a chance to see this games here.

If the games were on sale on Steam most of the time they were 50% off. Highest discount I can remember was 66%.

To my knowledge, there are no actual Square releases on GOG. Only the oldest stuff Square bought from Eidos...

I'll agree that it's definitely gotten easier to navigate over time. They've even got a starter guide on their site now! I'm primarily talking about the customization of it all. It's just that there's just so much available that it can get easily overwhelming. Starting smaller and then leaping into it afterwards just seems to be the most logical step for me.

And I wouldn't be a fan of CRT filters if it weren't for my need for Composite/S-Video filtering. Many old games actually depend on those analog signals for certain pseudo-effects to work correctly. That's especially true for games on the Mega Drive (that's what most folks call it around here, even if I don't), since that system doesn't support true transparency effects and has a limited color palette compared to the SNES. I only use CRT on top of that to make the image look less horrible afterwards.
