Greetings to you all (Fear not ! There's a TL;DR for you at the bottom...)
I do love videogames soundtracks... There are so many brilliant stuff in many different musical genres within video game world; those games tunes have been one of my main musical feed for the past years.
When i first came on GOG it was all cool: all those old games that were available DRM-Free but also bundled with nice goodies such as soundtracks...
Seems recently, the old custom of giving away soundtracks to customers met an abrupt end.
Sometimes they are only bundled with deluxe/collector digital editions (it still can make sense...)
Sometimes we can still purchase the music as separate DLC(ahem... well... ok... i guess)
Sometimes, i don't care because the music files are easily found within game directory
But there are other times when i'm a bit upset:
When we are not given neither the soundtracks nor even the possibility to purchase or listen to them
These cases are also even more frustrating when, for example, customers from other digital game platforms (drm-free or not) are more gifted than we are...
(it clearly then joins the GOGmix maintained by fronzelneekburm about us GOGers being treated as lower class customers ... lower class even when we pay as much or even more)
And when i discovered that, i also discovered the website Bandcamp that i didnt know about, and i saw that many many videogames music composers had a spot of their own on this website, both allowing us to directly purchase the music from the artist (in high quality file formats) and at least to listen to them for free outside the game.
But, i humbly confess, i don't have every games in my library and in 3 different platforms (lets name them GOG, Humble and Steam)... So i started this GOGmix using my librairies as starting source...
... And i really would like your feedback with your own testimony and information so i can correct, grow and improve the gogmix.
Also if you go lurk a bit on bandcamp you'll find that there are many games soundtracks displayed, not only indies but Triple A games (such as Civ 5, Kingdom of Amalur, etc) and games that are still available DRM-Free on other platform but not even yet on GOG (for example the cute shmup Assault Android Cactus, which music was composed by Jeff Van Dyck, who also composed the OST for Hand of Fate, available here, and Submerged, that is yet steam only)
What are the criterias for a game to fit in the mix:
- Game is/was sold on GOG (obvious)
- Game doesn't have soundtrack available on GOG (either in goodies or as DLC...)
OR
- Game does have sound track available on GOG but only a partial/sample soundtrack
- Soundtrack is accessible for purchase in a DRM-Free format at the Composer's Bandcamp page, or directly from this artist's personal website/store.
OR
- Soundtrack available in DRM-Free format at any place related to/focused on artists, video games or publishers in general (or this game/artist specifically) AND soundtrack purchase not tied to buying the base game on another platform (because we won't pay game twice here on GOG and elsewhere just for the missing OST)
Special case:
Some games include their music in plain soundfile formats (ogg, mp3...) directly accessible in the game install folder... By directly accessible, i mean they are in plain sight, without the need of unpacking/extracting them from games assets files with the help of a dedicated tool. We are talking music here, not everyone is experienced user enough to meddle with that.
- If every track from the official soundtrack are already in your game folder, it does not fit in this mix.
- If every tracks of official game soundtrack are here as well as additional ingame music, it does not fit in this mix (but you get happier).
- If most of the tracks of the official soundtrack are there BUT the official OST features additional music not found in game folder, then THIS does fit in the mix.
When in doubt, feel free to submit your case...
ALSO: (not directly related, yet important too...)
If the game's soundtrack is not available on GOG (in goodies or as separate DLC) but is included or sold as DLC for base game on a generic digital game distribution platform (as in "not the website of the game publisher/devs or composer's site) such as Steam, Humble Bundle/Store, Gamergate, or similar... it's a job for fronzelneekburm GOGmix !
Enjoy the music, folks
TL;DR
It's a GOGmix about GOG games which soundtracks you can't have here (as goodies or as DLC), but that you can still listen and purchase directly at the composer's own Bandcamp page... And i would gladly like your help to correct and improve the mix using your feedback...
If you find the Soundtrack available for purchase directly from composer's bandcamp mainly (or other artist focused music distribution platform) page, the link to the place is welcomed. Purchased soundtrack just need to provide DRM-Free audio files.
