Monsters sucked. I am not even sure why I watched the end of it. I hate the lead male actor, the lead female was okay. Her role was a little less helpless than normal, which was refreshing. But I'm always annoyed when a director makes such a pretentious movie, then when it turns out to be pretentious and kind of suck I want to kick them in the shins... hard.

I think the last good one I saw was Ip Man 2.

a great homage to oldschool gangster movies. Also I found Ryan Gosling didn't fit.

Just watched 'The Sting.'

like 'Butch Cassidey and the Sundance Kid,' it was great. Lots of fun, and two awesome leads.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Loved it. Those Brits really know how to make a good Spy drama. I especially liked Gary Oldman in it.

The US version is the only one I could find streaming over here :) Will look into the German version as well.

Just saw Hanna


Basically, it's what happens when you combine bland characters, a thoroughly underwritten plot, a seeming lack of anything remotely resembling human logic or sense, completely wacked-out camera work, a horrific soundtrack (literally one of the worst I've ever heard), humor that is somehow both strangely perverse and incredibly cliched, and an utter failure at presenting any psychological or emotional depth--which the movie spends most of its time trying to do.

This makes it all the stranger (and more frustrating) that the few fight scenes were pretty damn good, and the beginning was quite promising--even engaging. Like it belonged in another movie.

Hanna reminds me a lot of Pitch Black, in that it reeks of potential that was either wasted by bad directing decisions or buried by unconvincing presentation. But unlike Pitch Black, Hanna doesn't have anywhere near enough good to make it even partially enjoyable. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.

I love Gary Oldman. Although he tends to either be amazing (The Professional, The Dark Knight), or horrible (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the myriad of B-grade films he's been in, etc). There's not much in between.

Just watched 'Equilibrium' again for probably the 5th time. I absolutely loved the movie when I first saw it a few years ago...and I still love it. But the more times I see it the more I start to understand the issues people have with it. The whole dystopian world is REALLY under-realized. It just feels like a checklist of all the necessary "facist society" things...not like anyone thought about the details of how a society based on repression of emotion would really evolve. And although the acting is pretty good across the board, the dialogue is often quite lacking. Oh, and there's those scenes that are just...cheesy. But on the other hand, I still think that the movie does manage to be fairly affecting in some areas. Watching a man try to deal with feeling emotions for the first time in his life is quite fascinating, even when it isn't always handled with a deft hand. And of course, there's the fight scenes, which are absolutely awesome. It does a really good job of building everything up to the final sequence. And although the "slap fight" at the end is, truely, rather silly, I still love it.

It's still my favorite flawed movie.
