I watched Valhalla rising yesterday. This movie is a masterpiece.

I watched Memento last night. My brain is still recovering.

Valhalla rising is not an accessible movie and I'm sure there are hundreds of reasons to hate it. But I fell for it and every single frame was a piece of art to my eyes. Not to mention the enigmatic soundtracks.

Black Dynamite. Hilarious satire of blaxploitation flicks and just over the top fun. The final battle vs. the 'big boss' with nunchuks is made all the more funny by who that big boss is. :)

Oh no no, you got me wrong. I didn't hate the movie, it was pretty interesting and I enjoyed it, I just don't think it's a masterpiece like you do. But it sure is the kind of movie that will receive either a lot of praise or hate depending on who you ask. I sit somewhere in the middle with my feelings about the film, and now that I read my previous comment again I realise that it has a negative touch to it, which wasn't my intention. I always find movies that differ from the mainstream interesting to watch and Valhalla Rising was no exception, it just didn't appeal to me so much. The ending kinda bothered me as well because I didn't really get it and it's the primary thing I was referring to with the "artistic dead end". Doesn't mean someone else couldn't see the purpose of it, of course :)

I totally understand what you said : you don't hate the movie, you were just disappointed. Which is perfectly fine. I wasn't particularly talking about you. :)
I was just saying (and you seem to agree with that) that this kind of movie doesn't leave people indifferent. This movie is so peculiar that I understand why people would hate the movie : poor dialogues (but awesome acting in my opinion), no narration, extreme violence, weird musics (to most ears), minimalism etc... Not to mention that nothing is obvious in that movie, you have to draw your own conclusion(s) and I know that most people don't like that.

Yeah, I think we understand each other here :) It's great that people have different opinions and when we talk about a movie like this it offers possibilities for particulalrly good discussions.
BTW, anyone seen or going to see The Expendables? Me and a friend of mine are going to check it out next Monday and I must day that I'm really excited, mainly because of the awesome cast. I really like the idea how they got all those great guys of the 80's (yeah there are others as well) in the same movie and I'm looking forward to see how it turned out. I'm not expecting it to be a masterpiece but that won't slow me down, and anyway I think it's good to keep cool and avoid any huge disappointments, should there be some.

I am not over-exaggerating when I say Scott Pilgrim is the best movie I've seen all year. Yes, there were some pretty heavy-hitters so far, but Scott Pilgrim was the best. It's not because it's game-related or has a bunch of hipsters (I hate hipsters); there was just this energy that exuded from the entire film that is almost impossible to describe. The comic-style visuals work beautifully because they do not half-step; the entire movie is submerged with beautiful pans, zooms, and still shots accentuated by scribblings of a madman. The characters have multiple layers to them; you learn to love and despise Scott and his cohorts. I'd like to call it a coming-of-age story, but I think that would spoil it to much. I want to watch this movie over and over again to infinity. It's reached "Star-Wars watchability" in my book.
Also, the police force that bursts in at one scene will have you on the floor laughing your ass off if you're familiar with the actor making an appearance (no, it's not Simon Pegg or Nick Frost. Sorry, Wright fans).

Finally saw In the Loop...goddamn hilarious. Funny lines throughout, good satirical mockery, and Peter Capaldi's ability to spit out profanity is awe inspiring.

Ok not technically a move, but if you want you can pretend this is either a really long movie or a bunch of super short movies
