If you like chinese folklore : Raise the Red Lantern (1991).
A cinema list thread--I have to post here.
I couldn't really name my ten favorite movies of all time--it changes on a regular basis--so here are ten movies I really, really like:
Seven Samurai: I guess if you held a gun to my head and insisted I pick an absolute favorite movie, this would be it. Kurosawa's masterpiece--about as marvelous an action epic as you could hope for.
Star Wars: The original is by far the best. Pure cinematic wonder.
Drunken Master 2/The Legend of Drunken Master: Jackie Chan doing what he does (or at least did) better than any other human being. More dance than cinema.
Audition: The greatest horror film ever. And really, other than a couple of memorable bits earlier on, only the final 15 or so minutes are truly horrifying. Other movies may outshock or outgruesome the finale, but they aren't anywhere near as masterful in ratcheting up the tension to an excruciating level--and then letting it snap.
North by Northwest: Hitchcock's best thriller.
The General: Brilliant silent comedy by Buster Keaton.
Oldboy: A surprisingly weighty tragic thriller.
Raiders of the Lost Ark: This is the closest I've seen to a perfect movie. Impeccably crafted and all kinds of fun.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb: Hilarious and chilling in equal turns. That ending.
The Castle of Cagliostro: An animated masterpiece that stands proudly alongside the best live-action adventures.
As for recent viewing, I bought Ponyo over the weekend. Absolutely magical--like a children's storybook brought to glorious life.
The Last One I saw in the theater was Star Trek - Loved it.
Can't wait for Iron Man 2
Anyone see Paris, Je t'aime? It's awesome.
Also why has nobody mentioned Office Space here? What is wrong with you people?
