Lenny: I like both those movies. I was pleasantly surprised by The Ruins too. Kinda original concept, atleast today when horror is mostly slashers or ghost stores with little girls.
avatar
KavazovAngel: Any movies you can recommend me? I quite liked The Grudge and The Ring, anything else good with dead little girls? :D

Not sure I can recomend it but here is another such story:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382628/
Also a american remake so should fit the bill :P

You might like The Orphanage. It's not quite the same kind of story, and it's more of a ghost story than a horror movie, but I thought it was pretty good.

Aatami: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
OldBoy
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
They are the Vengeance Trilogy, with OldBoy being my favourite. I have to cut this short for now, so i'll leave it to imdb or wiki to explain it. I might come back and edit this post later.

I found Sympathy for Mr and Mrs to be pretty lackluster. I think that if people didn't know that it was made by the same director as Oldboy, noone would like it. Good old wikipedia spread acting up again!
I just watched Primer tonight, on reccomendation of this thread (thanks guys!), and I have to say it was kindof meh. I actually followed the entire plot, minus one key point (So since I am not lying, am I a savant?) SPOILER BELOW....YOU ARE WARNED!!!!!
....I warned you!
...That being that the blonde guy had the failsafe machine up and running BEFORE breaking the discovery to the dark haired guy, and that the dark haired guy had found out about it and used it already. The movie reminded me of Pi in texture, but it was nowhere near as well-done structurally or thematically. I felt like the movie was a poor man's memento, with ridiculously and unnessasary amounts of jargon. Still, a solid 3/5 from me.

I would suggest you don't bother with Dark Water, it's a quite a poor film. Not sure about the original though, that may be better...
Repo: The Genetic Opera. Awesome musical/horror movie, even if Paris Hilton is in it...(She did a good job is all I have to say.)
Also watched Ginger Snaps...decent werewolf flick.
The Host.
Excellent Korean horror/sci-fi film. There's also a slight hint of comedy in there aswell. I really recommend this one. Also, NEVER use the english Dubs.
Pans Labyrinth
Brilliant film set in Spain. There is a nice blend of Fantasy and War.

The Host was OK, but was FAR too reliant on CGI. The acting was a little suspect as well. Pan's Labyrinth had *moments* of brilliance, but it was too scizhiphrenic for it's own good. It had no idea what it was....was it a war movie, a horror, a fantasy, a fairy tale, what was it?
Additionally, well done dubs are well worth watching...I like to watch a movie the first time Dubbed if it's available, and then on subsequent viewings subtitled, so let the actors act. Crouching Tiger was enhanced greatly for me by utilizing this method.
I would like to reccomend Che Part 1 as well...fantastic film...might be Soderburgh's best, or at least second best (behind Solaris).

Pans Labyrinth wasn't supposed to be one type of movie. That is what is appealing about it, to me.

lowyhong: The Dark Knight is one of the best action movies ever made, and the best superhero movie made. But you guys probably already know (but maybe not acknowledge) that
And then, there's Indiana Jones. The first three are perfect. Harrison Ford is the man, period.
The last film I saw was Ip Man. I don't know if it's out in US and Europe cinemas yet, but it's a film by Donny Yen. Very good action scenes, not too over-the-top like Jet Li's stunt choreographies, and the storyline is decent too. On top of that, it's based on the true story of one of Bruce Lee's masters. Can't get better than that

anjohl: *pfffft*
The Dark Knight is the most over-rated warmed up sack of shit ever put on celluloid. The *only* reason, and I mean the *only* reason why people liked it is because Ledger died before it came out. They had a good marketing team too, convincing everyone that the "Why so serious?" shirt was the hottest thing since Vaginas.
Heath Ledger did *not* play the joker in that film, he played Osama Bin Laden. The *only* decent thing about the film, and it was actually incredible up until the CGI kicked in, was Aaron Eckhart as Twoface. Too bad they didn't just edit the film so that Joker died, and Twoface lived...I would love to see him in a movie devoted to him, with NO cgi...let Savini do the makeup.
Batman Begins was one hell of a movie though. I cannot for the life of me understand:
a) why Nolan completely wasted the momemtum he had coming out of "Begins", and
b) how people can be duped by such a ho-hum movie.
Best comic movies for me, in order, are:
1) History of Violence
2) Iron Man
3) X-Men III
4) V for Vendetta
5) Fantastic Fou: Rise of the Silver Surfer
avatar
ElPixelIlustre: I've seen both Quarantine and [REC] and they are almost the same movie, though I probably prefer the spanish one because I watched it first (spanish actress is also hotter).
Now, some really good recommendations: Oldboy, Seven Samurai, High and Low, 3-iron, Survive Style 5+, The taste of tea, My sassy girl, In the mood for love. (Yeah, they are all asian, that's because I think most of you haven't seen too much asian cinema)

Oldboy fucking RULES! The other two in the "vengeance trilogy" did virtually nothing for me though.
avatar
whodares2: Pulp Fiction and the Shawshank Redemption are a couple of my more favoured movies.
Wait, you actually liked The Last Samurai? What a snore. Catch Me If You Can wasn't a bad film, though.
avatar
michaelleung: Last Samurai is an incredible piece of filmmaking, I actually preferred it to the elitists favorite, "Seven Samurai". Excellently acted, wonderfully directed, with amazing pacing, and some of the best cinematography I have ever seen in a period piece. Then again, Es Zwick ALWAYS makes beautiful looking movies with great pacing. Blood Diamond, Defiance, etc.
avatar
Robbeasy: Standard book adaptaton rules apply, particularly where SK is concerned...
The Book is ALWAYS better than the film....;o)
avatar
RSHabroptilus: And King...erm...King isn't even a very good writer. >_>
avatar
RSHabroptilus: incorrect. Stephen King most definitely *is* a great writer, YOU just don't like him. This liberal Gen X concept of "opinion" really upsets me. Things can have an objective "goodness" about them, that can be quantifiably and qualitatively demonstrated. For example, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorcese *ARE* good directors. Anyone who disagrees with that statement misunderstands the definition of "opinion". One can DISLIKE a good director, but that person is still a good director. One can like a bad movie, but it's still a bad movie.

I have to disagree with you on The Dark Knight. I couldn't care less about Heath Ledger, yet I loved the movie. But someone needs to get a different Batman than Christian Bale, because that Smoker's Voice is awful. He's just awful with any accent. Did you see Public Enemies? If there were an Academy Award for "Best Nicholas Cage Southern Accent Impression", he would take it by storm. You know who else sucks at accents? Leonardo Di Caprio, yet it seems that every director requires him to do one.

Hmm, not coherent enough for me. As a VERY serious film critic (I am an aspiring director), I cannot stand bad pacing, tempo, obvious plot points, or traditional narrative structure in film. Pan's had a lot of problems in those areas. I loved the general though! He was pretty hardass.

Bale's gotta go for sure. I think he did ad admirable job as Bruce Wayne in Begins, but just like TDK, once he dons the "cowl" and the Smokmers voice, it goes to shit. I also thought having Scarecrow look so asian was a bit odd as well. Still a great film. I like what Di Caprio has been doing with Martin Scorcese, Gangs of NY, Departed, and the Aviator were pretty solid films.
Bale's career peaked with American Psycho and The Machinist. All downhill from there. And yes, I saw "The Prestige" and hated it.

I always considered Solaris one of Soderberghs worst since it was incredibly boring. The Limey was about a hundred times better, give or take some.
Just watched V for vendetta. I can't believe I missed this when it came out. The best movie based on a comic I have seen.

Great movie, I saw that a while ago (it was on TV), but I watched it in Korean with Chinese/English subtitles. That was hilarious. I'm told an American remake will come out, but I don't think it will be very good.

You're kidding. The BEST movie based on a comic?
Actually, you're aren't half wrong.

I too think those are the best and most intereting movies he has been in so far.
But I also think he was ok in the new terminator movie and I also enjoyed his wildly destructive downward spiraling crazy charater in Harsh Times.
Regin of fire and Equilibrium also comes to mind as pretty cool unusual movies that he was in.

The subtitles are way better than the dubs. Also, an American remake? Damn... I wish they would come up with something original, rather than remake something. Although saying that, I liked Peter Jacksons remake of King Kong.
