I'm so thrilled to see this thread so active! I have been really busy and haven't been able to take the time to participate. Now, I've looked at every single game mentioned here if I didn't already know it (and I didn't know most of them.) There are so many cool looking/sounding games I've never heard of, if only I had more friends and money to try them all! The Arkham games have appealed in the past but one thing or another has always prevented me from getting it. Resistance and Talisman look right up my alley.

One game I've played and like (though not enough to have mentioned it initially, obviously) is Agricola. I have it and all of the expansions and it is a lot of fun but a little slow and takes a lot of learning.

Hammercorps: The COIN series is really enjoyable.
I did a search for this a little bit and couldn't find them, could you find a link to some information? They sound cool.

Ixamyakxim: It's funny you made this thread now drealmer7 because I've been hankering for a new game. I actually have 3 in mind and if you and / or others don't think it would be too much of a derail I'd love to ask for advice here!
As said, it wouldn't be a derail at all. Entirely the point! Find more good games that you might not have known about otherwise.

BlackMageJ: The Resistance: A very simple game of betrayal and deceit. Players are randomly assigned to either the loyalist or spy teams- spies are outnumbered, but know who the spies are. Loyalists can't be sure of anyone's affiliation except their own. The idea is to assemble teams to go on missions (which just consist of secretly voting whether they succeed or fail), where loyalists want to make sure there are no spies, and spies want to fail the missions without being caught.
I wish I knew 5 people!

That looks hilariously fun! Have you played any of the sequel/spin-offs?

mistermumbles: ...I've always avoided those games that require audio cds or dvds (the latter being almost always crap anyway).

Not to mention one can expect that eventually the app may become too outdated to work on whatever is current tech. At that point, the whole board game will become broken due to reliance on this mechanic.
We used to have Clue: The VCR Mystery Game. What campy fun! I wish they'd do an updated DVD version with more complexities.

They're all by this same designer:

Andean Abyss, Distant Plain, Fire in the Lake... and I'm forgetting one at least...
Of course Labyrinth, as well I think Cuba Libre is also in the COIN system.

I currently own "<span class="bold">Munchkin</span>", "<span class="bold">Munchkin 2 &ndash; Unnatural Axe</span>" and "<span class="bold">Munchkin 3 &ndash; Clerical Errors</span>", but I also played "<span class="bold">Super Munchkin</span>", "<span class="bold">Star Munchkin</span>" and "<span class="bold">Munchkin Fu</span>" with my friends.  I've never had a chance to try the board games.

The best thing about "Munchkin" is that you can mix different decks for a good laugh...  Put together "Munchkin 1 ― 3", "Star Munchkin" and "Munchkin Fu", and imagine yourself playing a "Cyborg-Wizard", fighting a "Karate Squid" with a "Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment" !  :-D

How playable would Munchkin be with two people?

I've always played the game with two friends, and it was always fun and challenging! It's also possible to play against a single player, but the game is easier and a bit unbalanced. This game is definitely designed for three or more players.  "<span class="bold">Munchkin Quest</span>" is designed for 2-4 players, but I've never played it.

Take a look at <span class="bold">this page</span> for a complete explanation, and alternate rules that can be used for a two players game.
I don't find Munchkin a game (just like Nothing Personal) it's better to just decide beforehand who wins, and play a real game with the saved time.

Favourite games: Age of Steam; Automobile, 18xx-games, Twilight Struggle, Hannibal Rome Vs Carthage, Terra Mystica, Runebound, Agricola, Napoleon's Last Battles, Castles of Burgundy

Why do you feel that way about Munchkin?

Could you give us some information about the games you listed or at least some links to good spots for information on them? Thanks for participating!
Don't know about Munchkin, but I do love me some Nothing Personal! If you enjoy games where players stab each other in the back, front, sides and face, you'll dig it.

I recently picked up Xenoshyft Onslaught, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys co-op games with a bit of deck building. It's essentially Starship Troopers : The Game - Players work to defend their base from increasingly nasty waves of insectoid enemies of various types. Each round, you also get to purchase new cards to add to your hand to help you arm up. Really great art on all of the cards, but good grief does the difficulty ramp up!

I'm also a huge fan of Viticulture. I bought it on a whim (how good could a game about winemaking be?!), and was so pleasantly surprised that I've since purchased the Tuscany expansions for it. Fantastic worker placement game with a lot of options and good choices to be made. Do you focus on building up your winery, or trying to sell wine early? Get a little extra cash with a tour of your vineyard, or play that card which allows you to plant three cards worth of grapes? Tuscany adds an entirely new board to play on, more of every card deck, added structures to build, and a lot of asymmetry between players which makes things more interesting.

Don't know if any of the rest of you are Boardgamegeek users, but here's my account page : https://boardgamegeek.com/user/AB76

Xenoshyft looks extremely cool. Shame there's no Czech translation, how old is the game? My wife's not a great english speaker, so she still enjoys localized games more when they're text-heavy (Fantasy Flight is great at localization)
Catan is my all-time favorite, I haven't found anything else that even comes close to this almost perfect board game. Haven't had the chance to try Dominion though, and while I think Carcassonne is overrated, I have only played the basic version, and many people say that it's only really good with the expansions.

The game I want to try out the most at the moment is Dead of Winter. It sounds incredibly awesome.

It only came out commercially earlier this year. It's a Cool Mini or Not (one of their first 'Not' games) title, but I have no idea if they're known for doing localization.
So as I mentioned earlier I'm looking at a few games. Here they are and my thinking on them. I'd love any pointers from someone who has played them!

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: I think this would be mostly likely to see play time. I love the ruleset and the way items are cards yet you maintain a persistent character that gains benefits outside the deck as it levels. Love the idea of finding loot and carrying it forward in your deck. I DON'T love the idea of "power creep" - I had a ton of fun in the Lord of the Ring card game and added a few expansions, but I found I just couldn't keep up. Even if an expansion sounded really fun and interesting to me, because I hadn't been building increasingly more powerful decks with new combos / cards, I found the newer scenarios, no matter how fun in concept, just became too difficult. The other thing I'm worried about is that, aside from my character getting new gear and levels the game seems very "samey" from one scenario to the next. After I play the base set, can I go back and have fun with it? If I do add an expansion, can I add any one I want or am I forced to get the "next" one in line because further expansions would be too difficult without previous cards. Do the missions have enough variety or am I just plowing through stacks of 10 cards the same way every time?

Game of Thrones: I've wanted this one for a while now. I hold off because it seems like it really shines with a larger group (5 - 6) rather than the 2 or 3 I'm likely to get. I think this one might see the least play time, but it's also the one I "want just to have" the most (I'm sure fellow boardgamers will know this LOL - even if a game isn't that likely to see table time, some just have mechanics / themes / rulesets that you simply MUST have ;) ).

Merchants and Marauders: Love the theme and really unlike any other game I have. Wandering the Caribbean, buying new vessels, hiring crew and undergoing quests just seems like a ton of fun. This is sort of the "wild card" of the bunch as I've had my eye on GoT longer and I think (presuming I don't get bored) Pathfinder might get the most playtime but this one just has a certain "it" factor that's jumped it to the top of my list.

So anyway feel free to offer any suggestions and impressions of any of these. Like I said, I'm only going to add one for now and I'd love any help out there ;)

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game - I personally was not wowed by the first box (the 3rd set just released). It's a neat idea, but it often just boiled down to deck diving with a timer. Almost every single scenario that I played boiled down to plowing through stacks of cards the same way every time. I've read that the newest set (Wrath of the Righteous) adds a few wrinkles to play, but I'm not too eager to find out.

Game of Thrones - Yeah, this really needs the full player complement to really shine. There is an expansion (Feast for Crows) that makes the initial setup playable for 4 players, otherwise you need at least 5 of the 6, or some factions can just run wild right off the start. It is a terrific game, though.

Merchants and Marauders - If you like Sid Meier's Pirates, this is essentially the board game version. Terrific game, works well even if you only have 2 or 3 players, and the new expansion apparently adds a lot of new options. The expansion is entirely modular, so you can pick and choose which elements you want to add each time.

Crassmaster:
Thank you for these! You know it's funny as Pathfinder was initially near the top but the more I thought about it the more wishy-washy I got. Your feelings on it seem to mirror some of my worries so I think I'll be leaning more toward a "proper" boardgame for this go around. Thanks for the quick pointers on the other two as well! Decisions decisions...
