clarry: I don't understand. Is he saying that computer gives you stroke? That would be news.

What if I change hobbies.. say I start jogging. And then I get stroke. Should the mourning father now tell people not to jog?

richlind33: There's a particular condition that is caused by sitting
Then blaming computers or games is a bit misplaced..

It's not too uncommon for me to spend 15 hours a day (sometimes more) on computers but I have a motorized desk that allows me to stand, different types of chairs that support different postures, and I'm probably getting a squishy/bendy balance board thingy that keeps the feet moving a bit while I'm working standing.

Lack of exercise + addiction is a real issue though. I guess it's an issue for me too even though I'm no addict.

Tauto: That's what I expected here, know all's putting the boot in and talking crap about someone else's tragedy.
That's pretty much, what almost everybody does to me, all the time (even after them causing said tragedy, first). I can take it all and still keep going, invigorated at that, on top. Others should learn to do at least that much, as well. Survival of the fittest and of the most durable/tenacious ones, thing's called. Natural selection is unforgiving, weakling mentality/disposition potentially deadly. Cheers.

P.S. Black humor and self sarcasm can be exquisite assets, too.

If I had to hazard a guess on what killed this gamer is similar things that killed other gamers such as dehydration (not enough water) due to the fact they drink nothing but Pop (sodas/Soda pop) and energy drinks. At the end of the day until we get a proper autopsy we can speculate on what killed this gamer. It is possible that a stroke killed him though I am giving another possibility based on other cases that I have read about this topic.

But to blame games and gaming in general is just plain wrong here. I know the father is grieving here but in my mind he is at fault here not checking up on his son and saying something to him. Like Son isn't time to get off of the computer and do something else. Here Poor parenting played a part here.

Yes gaming can be addicting if you let it.
You need to keep a clock next to your computer screen, otherwise you will slip into the computer time vortex where five minutes of game time translates into five hours of real time!

Edit: I put a clock next to my computer screen because i was sick of running out of time so fast, feeling like i only just sat down to a game and TIMEZUP... WTF?? Now, with the clock there, i get much more game time, its miraculous!

Actually, computers today allow us to go places we've never been before - like watching four different kinds of pron at the same time while we furiously fap ourselves into oblivion. lol

Sometimes, just....one....more....turn, is one turn too many. But hey, I rode my bike today! ;p

KiNgBrAdLeY7: Playing games = killing time.

YOUR. Time.

Killing too much of your own time, well... Might lead you into killing YOURSELF.

Moderation, in all things, is required. And it's not the computer/videogames only... Same goes for mobiles, social/broadcasting media and so on...

R.I.P. the gamer. Just let us not R.I.P. those games.

This meme needs to die so hard. It has only been around for a couple of weeks but it already feels old, worn out and dumb.

Crosmando: ok boomer
Boomers are people born in 1946-1964, who are criticized for various political positions, for selfishness and for having (supposedly) left a mess to younger generations who don't have the same opportunities as the boomer generation.
None of this applies to Bradley. So you don't really understand what boomer means...seems like you're a clueless normie who's just mindlessly aping the latest trend!

It was a joke, take it easy. The post just seemed like the epitome of those things an old person would say.

pkk234: Less the game's fault more the no sleep, eating like shit, sedentary thing.
I remember a few years ago them finding in India or somewhere at an internet cafe someone died sitting in front of the game they were playing. It he'd been playing 18 hours or something straight...

Course 18 hours isn't enough to get you, but if you do that regularly... not getting enough sleep is what probably got both of them the most.

Acriz: Is it well known that sitting for too long is increasing the risk of blood clots, which once loose can find the way into the brain and cause a stroke.
So not enough exercise...

avatar
Acriz: It is gaming related, since games are so charming and all-encompassing that you can easily forget to move for a prolonged period of time. Moving a little bit, getting up and stretching a little at least once every hour, is generally good advice.
How do you forget? I will be watching anime for 30 something minutes and like 'yep time to get tea because my butt hurts', and playing a game i'll constantly be shifting to get comfortable after certain muscle groups say they are done being in one position and i need to change it up. Also drinking tea i gotta pee like every 30 minutes...

avatar
GameRager: This is all sadly true, but we'd likely have less incidents if parents would actually give a man about their kids more & not just give them a tablet/phone and leave them to their own devices until something bad happens.
Maybe they should make it a law. That children under 18 can't own/play on tablets/computers/gaming consoles. That way they actually develop skills and get physically involved before becoming a couch potato...

avatar
Karterii1993: Nah, reducing his screen time wouldn't have helped I think. Question is always why someone is addicted to something and the answer often is that they've got little else to live for.
Everyone on facebook is having a fun time and i can't go to places x/y/z, so i spend all my time playing these games. I'd give a shit about life if there was something to give one about, but alas there isn't.

Old dirty sock you're my only friend...

avatar
richlind33: Addiction is the problem, here, and gaming *can* be addictive.
Addiction, is merely a bandaid to deal with issues. But sometimes there's no way out. That's usually where going to the bottom of a bottle is the only recourse, killing time hoping things aren't so bad tomorrow.

mystikmind2000: You need to keep a clock next to your computer screen, otherwise you will slip into the computer time vortex where five minutes of game time translates into five hours of real time!
Happens watching news and different videos i enjoy... Course that's why i periodically check the time as well as having alarms set to remind me 'you got 20 minutes to get dressed and leave... you can faff about 5 more minutes'

You can lose track quite easily on some sites watching videos all day long(yt/etc).

That shifts the responsibility onto the gov't and not the parent, and is also overkill. Parents just need to check in on their kids every so often, monitor their pc usage/phone usage somewhat, and generally give a damn about their kids.

Good ideas.
im not even gonna bother read this article as I can pretty much guess that this is yet another of those "hurrhurr video games are evil huuur" kind of sensationalist article that serves nothing but to drum up outrage.

playing video games for days long without eating etc can kill you: wooosh. In other news the sky is blue

You gotta love the audacity of boomers who spent their lives in front of TV lecturing kids about playing video games. How about you just let them do what they enjoy?
By 17, it's too late to change someone's inner reward system that makes them pull uninterrupted 12-hour gaming sessions beyond the point of physical discomfort. You can coerce/force a change in behavior but that solves nothing at all and will probably lead to some other, even more harmful, form of escapism like alcohol or drugs. The parents should have taken an interest much earlier. You can't talk an addict out of an addiction, at best you can sort out any of the addict's external problems that are making it worse.

Very true. I agree that the parents should have done something. So I feel that the father in this case is at fault for not being strict with his son.
