nmorello11: -As I move into the professional world and away from college, I just don't have as much time to play video games anymore.
Oddly, for me it mostly went the opposite way. Studying meant spending also evenings and weekends for studies (all kinds of homework, reading for incoming exams etc.), and/or working on the side to get some money for studies (even during semester, I'd usually work on weekends and two weekday evenings in a grocery store, part time). I recall how stupid if felt I never really had any real summer vacation because I would be working in a grocery store whenever the university was closed. Plus, I had much less money to spend on gaming anyway.

Ever since starting working, both my free time and money available for gaming increased a lot. Now practically all evenings and weekends are FREE from any work-related duties, and if I have one month of vacation in the summer, I sure as heck am not going to some grocery store to spend my vacation working there. Nope, that time is also free.

Not to say that i didn't play games also back then, but I just feel that after the university my ability to play games (both money and free time) have increased a lot. Of course there are other things that affect that too (for better or worse), like starting a family etc., but those are not related to studying/working, really.

Anyway, goodbye. (Unfortunately I don't even recognize you, but that's just me I'm sure.)

TARFU: Here's a question for the folks following this thread:

Would you rather have a "hands off" approach from GOG regarding the forums, or a micromanaged pit of draconian rules?

snip snip

So, what say you GOG forum goers? Freedom or forum police state?
Hands off. But only because that's a false dichotomy you posited if I ever saw one...

Moderation =/= police state, and I really wonder if you believe what you posted, especially given such a mild example as posting about any competitor products. Sure that's a ridiculous rule (IMO), but in the grand scheme of things it's perfectly transparent, easy to understand, and not a meaningful burden to anyone's freedom.

Setting up two extreme choices leaves out a huge gap for a reasonable middle ground. I wonder why you are not giving this third alternative?

If you ask me, a bit of more or less justified backlash now and then from the owners if things get out of hand to keep a certain minimum level of civility, would be the optimum of keeping a good culture while also keeping the effort low.

Also calling anarchy freedom? I always thought personal freedoms ends where the nose of others begins. So, isn't calling anarchy freedom a quite common fallacy?

I guess what most people want is what they have in real life too - a good middleground between anarchy and strict rules.

I'm reading through the farewell threads and this jumped out:

nmorello11: What started off as something the OP probably originally intended to be something fun quickly devolved into 2 nerds arguing about something really, really, REALLY stupid.
Er, at the link, YOU are one of the two arguing nerds. So, you problem is "I posted in someone else's thread and a third person dared to argue with me!" Congratulations on managing to piss me off with your farewell post.
When I finished college is when I ceased being a professional and realized life was way too fucking short.

So when did you start being a professional?

omega64: So when did you start being a professional?
Serious answer: grade school.

I went to a really strict private school where they build little conservative asshole robots out of children. A fucking nightmare and I'm glad I survived.

That sounds terrible. :l

Damn, i really live in a different world where there's this word, better, concept called "middle ground". But no, when it comes to moderation on this forum it's always either A or B, there's nothing else.

And even more funny, it's not like Gog gives you freedom because it's something that they support, they do it so that they don't have to bother doing anything, it's a "do it yourself" forum. What? Something broken and we can't fix it? Use barefoot essentials. What? That person is constantly being a dick? We believe in freedom of speach.

But hey, let's point fingers to each other, it's our fault right? New users, old users, it's all the same, we we're given free will by the almighty Gog but dare not speak ill of it or you're deemed a troll.

Funny, I went to a public school where they build little liberal asshole robots out of children. Different dream, still a nightmare.

You mean the surviving part, right?
I cannot say I remember you, nmorello11, but if you actually are leaving, I wish you all the best on your journey and hope you find the time to come back some day.
