hedwards: That might be it. I know that there were some rather immature people here, even from the start, but it does seem like there's a lot more poop flinging now than there was back then.

I think it's a byproduct of having a much more mainstream audience. People here today don't appreciate a good high quality troll like folks did earlier. I think it's because there's a lot more youngsters and mainstream lamers and a smaller proportion of people who have seen what high quality trolling is like.

It's not just this site, I've seen other sites where it gets to the point where trolls don't even have to troll to get a reaction, just implying that the dominant group think isn't correct is sufficient to get branded a troll.

I used to love hanging out in the KoL fora flaming the shit out of people. They had some epic flamewars back in the day. It's a shame that by the time I left it was largely reduced to a bunch of limp wristed bitches.

Tarm: Oh yes I've seen this before too and it's sad seeing GOG going down the same road in several ways.
I'm with you with the crowd thing. The more mainstream a community on the net is the more moderation and/or steering it needs. Mainstream folks simply are too much of egoistical bastards for it to work otherwise. That shows in the trolling. :P
Yeah, it's hardly just this site, I've seen other sites that used to have high quality trolling go down the crapper. Most of them also had either no moderation or light moderation.

If you think this site is bad in that regard, just look at what's happened to slashdot. They used to have some rather clever trolls show up at times. By the time I'd left it had deteriorated to the point where an asshole was doing copy pasta of an extremely long set of instructions about hosts files. Which wouldn't have been any sort of problem at all had the people running the site not been completely inept with regards to writing code. That was like a 5 minute fix.

I miss the good ones like Dr. Bob chiropractor. Even those care and storage of niggers was at least slightly clever, at first.

Klumpen0815: Reasons:
- the infamous Erdogan thread
Sorry to see you're leaving. As others have said, it's a shame to see good people leave as a consequence of the actions of the rotten apples on the forum (of which we do indeed seem to be getting more and more).

I checked out the Erdogan thread (I hadn't read it yet as I tend to avoid the political discussions on the forum) since you mentioned it a one of the reasons you're leaving. I totally understand - some of the things that were said in that thread are disgraceful.

I wish you all the best, and I hope one day you'll reconsider.

Klumpen0815: - the infamous Erdogan thread
- the troll friendly rep system/exploits which won't ever get fixed as it seems
Wtf.
avatar
Klumpen0815: - the athmosphere is rather lacking manners and good will too often (moderation wouldn't help much though)
- scammers everywhere
We have known scammers and machtwo, plus gogwiki.

Klumpen0815: - I really miss the old PM system and am still annoyed by old conversations there being lost forever as it seems
- no more classic Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale without the remakes
Eh?

Klumpen0815: - regional pricing everywhere, now also for Don't Stave (at least the addon and the complete set)
-> the massive Russian discount being the most absurd thing about all this and still no honest reasoning for it
And you earn as low as people in Russia do. Especially after sanctions based upon Russia protecting own citizens? If objecting, travel to territory and ask people living there, not puppet media.

Klumpen0815: - Linux gamers still treated as third class (Linux ports of many games still only available elsewhere, no new DosBox and WINE packages anymore as it seems)
Not third class, but more second class. Then again, it was previously this way. This is coming from a Linux-only user.

Great! Seriously, thats awesome. And you want regional prices like in sanctioned Russia?

Klumpen0815: I know that some people here see me as their enemy but I don't do this with anyone.
Likewise, I can only see work as a plausible reason, which is great; but I don't remember anyone banning himself due to this...

Klumpen0815: Peace
Hope this thread is not seriously meant... Politics are result of power group clashes and are not everything.
You are always welcome here. : /

That is sad. I remember when I first started posting here was back in the... second? (it was the one with all the Nox hype) insomnia sale. It came up the Little Big Adventure had been free previously. I mentioned that I had missed out on it and you sent me a key. That really made the point that this community was different than so many others.
At first I thought Klumpen was moving onto some other stage of life like marriage, kids and won't have time for gog forums. But upon reading the description it seems he may leave for good because of bad experience with the forum.

Sad to hear. Farewell and all the best in your future endeavors and journey.
Nice having you here man, hope you come back soon! :)

Thanks! Well,.. whack.... That means I could've waited for current offering and get EE version almost for free... Still, its better than fate of Duke Nukem or Descent.

You should have opened up with that. I can respect that, but no need to burn bridges.

Those forums are not a job. There is no commitment. You post whenever you like.

Epitaph666: Linux Users have always been treated as third class, cause they are not the majority. No matter how i hate windows, and especially W10 (which i'll never jump to btw), it's the most popular OS out there.
The huge differences in engineering don't make it so easy, to have all GOG games on Linux. It's a huge task to complete.
And if developers don't seem to care, GOG can't do wonders.
This. As a member of a 2 percent minority, I'm thrilled to get any service at all.

Windows has an almost immutable slice of the desktop pie at this point.

The average computer user is a creature of habit. Windows got in earlier in the user-friendliness game and became the first great love of most average users who are change-adverse.

The average OS user is just not very promiscuous and after a 10+ relationship, it's just hard to get used to change.

I once incited a user to switch to Ubuntu after ~20 years of using Windows. I analyzed his needs and Ubuntu fufilled them all (not a heavy AAA gamer, not a iTunes user, Nvidia graphics card, etc). It installed easier than Windows (his initial incentive, he couldn't find his Windows key) and ran silk-smooth on his machine... but the GUI was a bit different from what he was used to, it didn't have the Microsoft logo and it was free which all felt wrong to him... so in short he couldn't get over his first great love.

So, he apologized to Microsoft for cheating, begged for forgiveness and moved back in with Windows. Like many mainstream users, he's faithful to his Windows.

An update.
Apparently, those who had Baldur Saga Classic edition (complete) can upgrade to new Definitive editions - with a discount. This is an additional one, which applies over the current discount for those who don't have them. That is seen only on checkout, just got all three EE titles with ~85% off. O_o

Completely unrelated, but whats about KDE, Kubuntu and possibly SolydK? I used Ubuntu until the whole Unity thing and Amazon stuff and switching desktops. Nothing wrong with user either, its freedom of choice (satirically, something which MS hates).

Don't mean and don't want to derail the thread, so I am signing off.
Hope that Klumpen0815 returns or rethinks.

Yeah, I regretted not opening with another desktop environment in a different distro in retrospect (Kubuntu, Mint, etc). I made a point to tell him that if he found didn't like Unity, I could come back and explore other alternatives with him, but I guess that advice didn't stick.

Unfortunately, between the moment he decided he really didn't like Unity and the moment he decided to tell me about it, he impulsively purchased Windows 10 for 150$ so he had a strong incentive at that point just to use Windows 10.

I'm guessing he'll probably be back when he has the time, although his goodbye thread might haunt him at that point.
