The movie was good but I didn't like some of the changes. I realize they had to alter somethings because the book was over 1000 pages, but all together brilliant stuff from a brilliant mind who is and will be missed.
I have not read the book, but I could not get through the movie. I found the whole religion vs science thing heavy handed and annoying and I absolutely could not stand Mcconaughey's character.

Also, everybody, please stop feeding that trolling asshat. You're not going to get through to him. You're just giving him the opportunity to vomit more misogynistic nonsense all over the thread.

Breja: Mcconaughey's character.
THAT IS THE ONE major change from the book to the movie I couldn't stand.

Palmer Joss in the movie and in the book are totally totally different and there is no stupid romance. They really screwed up with that.

And to the point dt was trying to make, it's a very down to earth realistic scifi story. While I don't see us getting blue prints from outer space any time soon, it does such a great job of taking this extraordinary story and making it "real". Star Trek always dealt with real people and real emotions and real dilemmas, but at the end of the day they were still on a space ship going warp speed which accentuated the Fantasy over the Science in SciFi. Contact very much leans to the Science aspect of it, allowing for some Fantasy, but almost as just a garnish, not a main aspect or story point.
In other words, it has the science in sciensce fiction. Most of what passes as sci-fi probably ought tto be called science fantasy.

Fantasy IS fiction, and fiction might be fantasy.
e.g. colonising a moon of Jupiter in the future is more likely than the existence of orcs and goblins - still, currently, they're both not real.

Pretty much goes for all Crichton (spell) books. The movies are obviously aimed for a wider audience and so they "action" it up a little, minus the ones he directed which, let's be honest, are boring to watch. :P The Andromeda Strain is a great read and it's fun to follow these people do their lab work, but waching it is pretty dull.

It's probably no coincidence both movies came out close to the same time. It was a good time for sci-fi movies.

Socratatus: Men are not only stronger, but even the smallest man has a greater muscle density and mass weight for weight than women. Men are also faster than women. There`s more, but I`ll leave you with that.

Ergo a warrior will always beat a woman in real combat.

I haven`t read the Witcher novels, but that is HIS fantasy world. From the game it`s not too bad, but I think that Ciri woman was a mistake.The series was good until she popped up with her super powers. She is too much like the Witcher and seems to me just a shoe horn for feminism- again. That said I haven`t completed the whole game, or book so maybe she`ll turn out less of a feminist character.

And the rest - (superhuman speed and stuff - her abilities in the game) is explained thoroughly in the novels.

Also Sapkowski's stories are full of strong and independent women - yes. But at least half of them are pretty vile and vain - men are just more crude in their methods to gain power most of the time.
