Emob78: But then why have a Fallout 'franchise' at all if the very different new titles can't or don't even try to honor the originals?
Money, probably. Established IP = guaranteed sales in the eyes of publishers. I for one am glad to see the franchise taking the direction it is, regardless.

avatar
Emob78: I'm all for Fallout going in new and different directions, but then Bethesda should stop forcing their programmers to keep paying lip service to the originals. Just make it a generic post-apocalyptic shooter series and be done with it. From what I've seen, Fallout 4 is a good example of what happens when young game devs try to interpret their vision of classic game mechanics.
I would love it if Fallout 5 decided to scrap character building altogether.

avatar
Emob78: They shouldn't bother. Modern game devs are good at texture mapping and placing mobile hit boxes within a game engine.
Is... that a bad thing?

avatar
Emob78: Trying to stay loyal to the original games' atmosphere, lore, and gameplay is just pulling the whole series in too many wild, unfocused directions - somewhere in the middle that band is bound to snap.
Fallout 4 actually does quite a lot to streamline the experience in that regard.

avatar
Emob78: And from the looks of user reviews, it has.
From the looks of the user reviews, there are a lot of people who don't know how to check system specs, don't pay attention to the developer of the game, and/or have been living under a rock for the past decade and don't realize this horse was already beaten to death 7 years ago when Fallout 3 came out. Also, Witcher 3 fans on reddit were organizing mass negative reviews out of spite.

avatar
Emob78: Fallout 1 and 2 could never be seen as shooters, because they were isometric games. The player blasted the hell out of tons of enemies in those games, yet the games weren't seen as shooters because of the perspective.
So... Crusader: No Remorse is an RPG?

avatar
Emob78: The new Fallout games are seen as shooters because of the first person perspective, and it has come to dominate the design and gameplay.
So... Pathologic is an FPS?

avatar
Emob78: That's fine to me. But just call shooting random raider gangs and upgrading weapons as an RPG? That's a shooter with refined shoot 'em up game mechanics.
There's a lot more to Fallout 4 than that, even if the RPG elements are shallow when compared with traditional CRPGs. I suggest actually trying the game for yourself before you pass judgement.

avatar
Emob78: We're arguing over apples and oranges, really. I just want to be clear which one can be ground to pulp and called orange juice. Don't hand me a glass of apple juice and say, 'well, apples and oranges are basically the same thing, so enjoy this glass of orange juice.' Most gamers are smart enough to detect the difference. Their eyes and ears may have not noticed it, but their brain did.
I actually don't care in the slightest what Fallout 4's "real" genre is, because regardless of whether it's an RPG, an FPS, a CRT, a BRB, or an LOL, it's still an absolute blast. However, just because it's not the kind of RPG you like doesn't mean it isn't an RPG. Take a look at what the game is, take a look at the genre classification for similar contemporary games. At the very least, if we MUST classify it as an FPS, it's definitely an FPS with heavy RPG elements. And honestly, at that point the definition is so blurry anyway, what does it really matter?

I dunno, it's 3:30 in the morning here and I need to go to bed. That's really all I have to say on the subject, so you can respond or not respond as you wish, I probably won't participate anymore. I'll be too busy playing Fallout 4 :)
jefequeso,
I hope you enjoy the Fallout series. You clearly like the direction they're going with it.

I don't and am quite content to stay loyal to what brought me to the dance. No need to change the tune.

JDelekto: BTW, what I find interesting is that shortly into the game, you're introduced into crafting different things. It's almost like you're supposed to pick up a bunch of random crap (and trust me, there is a lot of that) and turn it into something.
I kind of wonder if I should have crafted stuff before leaving sanctuary...
I found that sanctuary missions is more like fallout 4 tutorial for crafting, you can pass it or do it, it also giving you some benefit and achievement. Don't know with everyone but in my experience Codsworth is my best companion for scavenged craft items is because he can hold a tons of items than other my companions so far also he offered free purified water.

trentonlf: I am getting a PS4 tomorrow and contemplating getting the Witcher 3 later this month for it, I guess you would recommend it?
Both is a good games in my opinion, with their own strong and weakness points. for story and game mechanic i'd choose the Witcher 3 and if you don't bother with story or game mechanic go with Fallout 4 both offered open world exploration.

Crewdroog: I heard that, from something like ign?, we do find other housing if building isn't our thing. I"m using sanctuary to store all my crap and so far, knock on wood, nothing has disappeared. Yeah, Red Rocket would be another good place to set up shop. I just wish I could find more freakin' traders nearby. I need ammo!!! :) have fun building. if you can post some screen shots, love to see what you have done. I keep seeing cement and keep going "nope!".
Can't upload screenshots here because I'm playing on my shiny new PS4. (Loving the PS4 btw!)

But the 'town' isn't much to look at, anyway. Just cleared and converted three houses into bunkhouses, scrapped a lot of debris, built a windmill generator and a water purifier, and started planting crops around a water pump.

I need to scavenge more plantable crops, enough to fully feed the people there and some extra for future-proofing, so it's back out into the wastes for me... The tentative plan is to search in a circular pattern around the settlement hoping to find more plants. I've found plenty of wild mutfruit, but unlike 'normal' mutfruit, it can't be planted... wtf.

Then I'll plop down a heavy turret or two and whatever else they ask for, and maybe a radio beacon to attract more settlers and some traders.

About scavenging:

Most of the houses and buildings in Concord are boarded up and can't be entered, which seems so wrong to me... It wasn't like this in previous games... was it? It's been a while...

And there's so much trash everywhere! It's a bit of a pain visually sifting through the junk and trying to figure out which items can be picked up and scrapped and which are set pieces.

I'm also somewhat put off by the "scrap everything" mentality promoted by the building system. I'm one of those gamers who does quick math when looting - e.g. "Is that item worth at least ten times its weight?" Grabbing pretty much everything is just weird to me.

Then there's the dog... that damned dog! Always underfoot and in the way when scavenging. I've started making him wait on the street outside when I loot small buildings. For the larger buildings, I'll take him inside, check for hostiles, and then plant him in the center of the main room while I poke around the building. I do like having him with me in the open wastes tho.

Edit: Snipping & taking back my positive words about the gunplay. Shooting from the hip is smooth, but the iron sights seem awful. The body of the guns (some of them at least) practically blind you. Having some trouble making precision stealth kills outside of V.A.T.S. :|

I need to correct my previous statement. FO4 is pretty fun actually, if you can look past all the bugs and glitches that currently haunts the game. The "building your home" function is out of my legaue though. If I wanna build houses and put stuff in them, I'd rather play The Sims. Other than that, it's a pretty solid title.

I recall reading a quote where someone said it was like "minecraft" and "sim-city". I'm not really big on the "crafting" side of things, I kind of like running around and just exploring stuff.

I think they have a little of something for everyone.
well, I just found the Fat Man and a third set of power armor. All these things you can get at lvl one if you explore early on. I also have found a few mini nukes. I'm kinda upset by this. Oh, you also get a minigun early. I kinda would rather have to play a lot of game before getting OP weapons :( Not a fan of this. I mean come on, THREE sets of power armor??

I did find a cute bandana for dogmeat. :)

if you want to see where i got the fat man, see my twitch feed

Have you tried sending the bot to one of the military installations and following it?

Shall I take you down memory lane, how it was Interplay who was determined to bring their Fallout and Baldurs Gate franchises to the console market? Or what "dumbed-down" games came from it? Shall we compare how much more Bethesda's approach is closer to the originals?

Someone told me that I could get that wonderful looking gun locked up back in Vault 111 by commanding the dog without having to be a very high level of lock picking. Is this true?

Breja: And even if I could run it on settings so high they would think the walls are melting I still wouldn't pre-order it. Don't pre-order. Ever. I don't know how many times we have to go over this. It's not like they'll run out.

markrichardb: Indeed. Wait for other players to rush headlong off the cliff so your fall will be softened by their broken bodies. These last couple of years have been BRUTAL for buggy releases.
Wouldn't it be better to say, "So you can just walk across their corpses without the pain"?
avatar
Crewdroog: ...my first pre-order ... did anyone else pre-order? Worried it's gonna be a buggy mess? I am.
avatar
mobutu: If you're worried then why did you preordered it?
I guess you were emotional, not rational.
