Crewdroog: i feel you on this. I was annoyed too. I made beds just to see what it was like, but I have no interest in doing anything else. I stopped playing last night when they bitched about needing a well.
Dig your own damn well! I just saved you from a freaking *SPOILER* lol. I also have this sick feeling that the more I upgrade, the more likely raiders are gonna hit or something stupid, and i'm just not dealing with that :)
Lol. Good to see someone else had that reaction, too.
But I'm wondering if the building mechanic is the only way to have a home base in this game? Are traditional Bethesda houses (a la Fallout 3, New Vegas, Skyrim, etc) available in settlements like Diamond City?
That Red Rocket station seems like a one-wanderer kind of place... Maybe they meant to give you the option to build either a town at Sanctuary or a personal home base at the Red Rocket?
For now I've decided to suck it up and build the town for the sake of having some allies in the wastes.
(boring summary below; recommend skipping the rest of this post, hahaha)
As expected, townbuilding occupied the whole of my last gaming session: Collected all loose junk from two houses, scrapped or stored nearly everything else in them, and turned them into bunkhouses. Four beds, a grill, and a table and chairs in each. Might do a third next session to future-proof the settlement.
Scrapped several ruined houses and some debris, and repaired a fence around a dirt area for a garden. Installed one water pump near the garden area. Was going to install a windmill power generator and water purifier for clean water, but I'm short copper, so now I have to go scavenging. Really, why isn't copper gained by scrapping the ruined houses? What the hell were they wired with? Lame. Might try to scavenge enough for two generators and two water purifiers for additional future-proofing. Don't want to have to do this again anytime soon.
Probably going to take at least two more sessions to finish the basics. Maybe three. But at least I'll have a decent base of operations from which to range into the wastes... unless raiders trash the place while I'm out gathering junk.
Don't get me wrong: I'm liking the game so far. Just finding this aspect tedious. Hoping it pays off...
