monkeydelarge: No. You can just install the unofficial patch and some mods then enjoy.

Because Fallout 2 is one of the greatest works of art made by man and more greatness is a good thing.

darthspudius: But that is still living in the past. We should be looking forward not looking down because something isn't like the previous game. That is just silly.
Why? Have you heard the saying, If it ain't broke, don't fix it. NEW and DIFFERENT, doesn't always mean better.

We're talking about Fallout 2 here. You couldn't of found a more broken game at the time! :P

True but after the unofficial patch, it's a great game. 99.9% of all the problems were fixed.

Of course they were, still doesn't back from the fact that Fallout 2 is an incredible mess without it! :D

For me, the game play is so awesome so all the problems I encountered when it just came out didn't bother me so much. I dealt with the five minute loading times and the disappearing car with a smile on my face.

As others have said, it works fine in Windows 7. Even the original Fallout 3 retail works if you patched it to 1.7.

I'm sorry to derail the thread a bit but is Mothership Zeta worth getting the GOTY version for? I have Fallout 3 (GfWL version) and separate disks with the other four expansions.

My apologies for necro'ing this months old thread, but I recently installed Fallout 3 without reading this, following the instructions on the Steam forum and I did apply step 2 ("Move DLCs"), not realizing it's as problematic as mentioned here.

Is there a way to figure out, if it did any harm? The video folder looks pretty small and orderly, the file names don't suggest to me that they are taken from different games, but how would I notice? Assuming the mod messed up all my Bethesda games, would those games tell me that they're lacking their .bik files if I tried to run them or just keep silent about it? Also, how can I check whether my game has found the DLCs and integrated them into the gameplay (GOTY version after using "Move DLCs")?
You should not need that. The moving stuff was for non-GOTY versions of the game. I have both Retail and Steam versions (GOTY both) and the moving stuff was for the people that had a Fallout 3 game and bought the DLC's separately ( those require activation through GFWL which is not available anymore).

TBH, Retail GOTY worked fine with offline profile, no major problems on newer OS (Win7+), while Steam version was a real pain in the arse. Lots of crashes, even after various fixes.

Well, too late, as I already did buy it on Steam and already did use the "Move DLC" option, but I assume if it was only looking for DLC folders that weren't there in the GOTY edition in the first place, it didn't do any harm either and the DLCs will still work?

You should be fine if they are in the correct folder (the one where you put the mods). You should see the DLC's checked in the game launcher, at the Data Files. I use for mods FOMM, but NMM is as good as any. Just my personal preference there:)
