GOG added the bonus games to my account directly. Can you only get a code when you already owned it previously, or was some other way to claim the game that I missed?

It's automatic. You only get a (temporary) key if you already own the game.

You can ask GOG via support to change those into gift codes:

Shall even work with those added games

After checking my unredeemed GOG gift code, I found a old Giants: Citizen Kabuto key, so:
