sanscript: So, in which category am I in exactly?
avatar
AB2012: Neither. What I was describing is that for those who are often the target of downvotes, at time of writing at least 4 people in this thread have "political stuff" in their avatar pictures / subheadings which attracts that certain kind of attention that often gets complained about because regardless of what their threads / posts contain, when it's in the avatar itself it basically puts a "political statement" in the sidebar on every post they make, and reaction to that will "follow" that person even to non-political threads. "The more political a person is on a forum that isn't about politics, they more they get downvoted" may not be a 100% consistent observation, but it's hardly "at random" either here on GOG or other forums where I've witnessed the same thing in the past.
With all due respect, I think you're out to lunch. It's to the point now that "family" is becoming a dirty word. Literally. So no, this isn't just about politics. It's about control.

I blame his new avatar. People with disagreeable avatars get downvoted more. It doesn't help that The Goonies is ass and all copies of that film should be shot into the sun.

He should go back to cat avatars and I'm certain he will get downvoted less.

skeletonbow: If GOG implemented something like this, they would receive more useful reports
avatar
clarry: If GOG implemented it, they'd botch it up and none of us would know because the score is hidden.

It'd stay broken for years, and people would make forum threads asking why their reports never seem to be taken seriously. Sometime in 2025, a blue would butt in to tell that they're looking into it and that it'll be fixed Soon^TM. Come 2030, reports are still not going through and nobody has seen a post from that blue in the past two years. Bumping the thread where the problem was reported & blue responded will be met with sound of wind echoing in the valley of nothingness. And then it will be buried, to be remembered again on its tenth anniversary. But there will be news about Galaxy 6.0.
Hrm. So we get Galaxy 6.0 though? Hrm.... thinking...

Ok, it's a worthwhile tradeoff, I'll take Galaxy 6.0. :)

I knew this thread would turn into shit, but still I didn't expect to read something this wrong and disgusting here.

Did you know that pirate ship was to scale?
It took them over two months to build it.

Good old times of practical movie making. I only recently re-watched The Goonies for the first time in many years, and I still think it's great. Sure, it doesn't blow my mind the way it did back when I was a kid, and it's transparently ridiculous, but I don't think it's charm has diminished at all with time. The Goonies, Monster Squad, Flight of the Navigator, The Explorers - they just don't make them like this any more.

I think "The Explorers" was just "Explorers". There was no "The" on the title.

AB2012: I did find it strange at first, but I don't think it's random at all given the people affected the most are the ones that either constantly talk about politics the most, start political threads or have political avatars / subheadings under their names. When some people have "Proud to be an SJW" whilst others have "Anti-SJW" as personal sub-headings to deliberately "goad" each other, that's half of what's turning the forum in on itself.

Edit: Other examples in this topic alone include one person's sub-heading about Trump and 2020 Elections and one other with an "InfoWars" avatar. Down-voting is often just a lot of otherwise neutral people getting very tired of hearing politics shoehorned into every single thread / avatar on a gaming forum.
Not politics. Extreme politics in which both sides think they are right for reasons, and think the other side is irrevocably wrong. And neither one is willing to listen to logic, nor provides logic to back up their arguments. They just constantly shit on each other, and the rest of the forum gets splattered in it. At least if I was the downvoting type, that's why I would. I generally don't care enough about rep to downvote much of anything.

sanscript: Thanks, and ditto! Hehe, I'm actually quite used to being "harassed" by trolls that either gets too emotional or too brainless to even conceive their own world :P

I have a tendency to speak my mind, and often without any filter... and many people just gets too offended :D
I also speak my mind but lately added a bit of filter to be nice and civil & fit in better and some were still suspicious/offended.

You've got me there. To be honest, I never quite understood the logic behind "the" being or not being in such titles. I mean, why is it "The Goonies" and "The Monster Squad" but "Explorers" or "Ghostbusters" do without it?

If people downrate people with "political" pictures or titles then they have a serious problem they need to deal with in how thin their skin is and how easy they get upset, imo.

Family is bad...since when? Here or everywhere?

If it's too political/bad we can take it to PM, btw.

I was tempted to downvote this because Goonies is awesome, but I will refrain this one time....pray I do not alter this deal any further. *waves hand*

Serious reply: If anyone seriously gets offended by ugly avatars they need to rethink their priorities.

GameRager: If people downrate people with "political" pictures or titles then they have a serious problem they need to deal with in how thin their skin is and how easy they get upset, imo.
I'm not justifying or encouraging it, simply observing that one man's "everyone must have thin skin for not wanting to hear about my politics on non-political forums", etc, is another man's "'Sensitivity' has nothing to do with it. There's a time and a place for everything and GOG is not Fox vs MSNBC..." I've seen it before in other gaming forums where a lot of people tend to play video games as a break or respite from the world, also see gaming forums the same way. This is why some gaming / tech site forums have a special "Politics" sub-forum separate from the General one - it's not to encourage more political talk, but rather they use it as a 'dumping ground' for those who just can't stop talking about politics on every forum anyway, that's more easily filterable for everyone else.

People can choose whatever avatars or signatures they like, start whatever topics they like, write what they like, etc. But it's fairly obvious that some members "followings" started with "taking a firm stance" on a political topic that ends up turning into a 'this person belongs to x political tribe' reputation that gets downvoted by people belonging to tribe y that 'carries over' to non-political topics. Then on top of that you get a large group of neutrals who are just tired of the encroachment of politics on forums that shouldn't even be political by nature. Personally I'm stunned that people think the solution to this is to hide the symptom without addressing the problem...

Or, you know, people who can't stop repeating the same vitriolic flame wars over and over again and need to constantly fly the colors of their particular bunch of morons to troll the other bunch of morons have a serious problem and should fuck off and stay fucked.

Seriously, there's plenty of places on the internet devoted to this shit - go and have those fights there. Why do people need to bring this shit up here is beyond me, but I know for a fact that it's what turned this place from one of the nicest communities I've seen online into just another dumpster fire.
