GameRager: Bah, I can't even comment civilly on game related threads anymore without people low rating them:

Example

Some losers have so little civility or nothing better to do than low rate everything I write to be asshats.

Imo this is nothing but subtle harassment(they know it bothers me somewhat yet they do it)......If I were a staff member i'd permaban those kinds of people. :\
They are rubbing one out as they spam the downvote button with multiple accounts, all they want is your lov'in and if you don't return it they go all emo and downvote your ass all the while getting hot and sweaty thinking of you.
Maybe they'll get rid of rep one day. As it stands it doesn't mean anything.

Yes.

In fact, at this very moment, you are the only one in this thread who isn't me.

I love how a large chunk of this thread is downvoted. :D

skeletonbow: … The best thing GOG could do at this point is to remove the Rep score completely, and replace the rate up/down buttons with a single "Report" button to report posts which are believed to violate GOG's terms of service agreement, and a dialogue that queries you as to what the violation/problem is giving multiple-choice options based on the actual terms of services, similar to how Twitch.tv does it. Then, when someone reports someone for a violation, keep track of an internal score nobody else can see in which if someone reports someone for a violation and it isn't a violation or just seems vindictive, they get a -1 to their internal score, and if they report a legit violation they get a +1 internal score.

Have all reports put in a queue, where each report is weighted based on the internal accumulated reputation of the people reporting posts, and act upon them in-order. Posts that are only reported by people with very low/negative scores get the lowest priority to investigate, and those who consistently issue false reports end up at some negative threshold eventually being completely untrusted in their ability to report legitimate violations. …
This is actually a good idea. It's not perfect (since even an untrustworthy account may legitimately capture a violation), but it is certainly both economical and sensible. It would pay for itself pretty quickly, if there were a lot of reports to police. (I'm not sure that is the case, however.)

kai2: IMHO voting on reputation is only relevant as a way for GOG to "enlist" users to take up moderation's under-staffing slack. It was obviously meant to alert GOG's small moderation staff to flashpoints -- harassment, bullying, and consistent anti-community behavior -- but probably was never meant to denote simple disagreements or differences of opinion. But -- in most cases I've seen (and in my experience) -- that's exactly how it's predominantly being used. …
This seems most likely. It's a fallacy to think that Gog are providing a service to the community when Ockham tells us they are most likely providing a service for themselves. The collateral damage (low reputation for sundry individuals) is an inconsequential cost, and the benefit gained (less effort) in the policing of the forum is measurable.

richlind33: If it bothers you that much make some alts and rep yourself. o.O
I don't do that anymore. It's against rules afaik, and I don't have the time like I did years back when I had alts(they were all banned but the trolls didn't get banned) to counter low rating by trolls.

This is a bit crude but I think it's close to home: the ones who low rate constantly likely are obsessed with it and like the effect it has on me so they keep doing it.

They likely won't(or not in a hurry) unless someone with power/money/big social media clout made a stink online/irl and forced their hand.

This thread and those like it(though they could be condensed into one thread to save space) have a purpose, though: to allow those being downvoted a place/chance to vent.

Here come the downvoat boat, toot toot!

You lose when you start taking what people say on the internet seriously.

Never get personal, even your name is too much.

Don't ever get alt. accounts to improve your "rep" or down "rep" another, i wouldn't consider wasting the time, besides being lazy has it's benefits.

You start doing that shit and you're already too emotionally involved, you should pull the plug and seriously take a walk outside.

At least it seems to happen to everyone. :D

I laugh my ass off at people who seem to think it's all coming from me and a small minion of my bots, evidently overlooking the fact that virtually everything I post gets low rated too. XD

A few days ago someone actually suggested that I was using my "army of bots" to low rate my own posts in order to divert suspicion from myself.

Ummmmmm.....yeah.
Okay. XD

All good points, well perhaps not the giving someone your first name is a bit too much but the rest is agreeable.

It would divert suspicion away from you and you can withstand the rep loss more with such high rep. o.0
