Hi all I'm in dire financial problems, will be losing my internet Connection next week. looking to buy one, to downlaod my GOG games to. had a look on amazon, but confused, too many options. any Recommendations?

my budget is £60

Honestly, I'd go with a 1to -internal- hdd and setting up disk mirroring. Tut: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/17926/use-drive-mirroring-for-instant-backup-in-windows-7/

Internal hdds are cheaper and better if you don't have a laptop.

Well any external hard drive will do. Be it Samsung, Toshiba, Intensto, WD or whatever they all have more or less the same amount of failures.

Just remember that any disc can possibly fail you under less then a year or work perfectly.

My Seagate Expansion 1TB is serving me well. I got it cheap a few months ago, and I haven't had any problems with it. It supports USB 3, and it's powered by the USB-cable as well, no additional power cables required, which is quite nice.

Take this a good example of why not to rely on web based anything. Always, under any circumstance, download your games immediately, backup, backup, and repeat as you can afford, and don't buy anything with a reliance on the internet.

I have a couple of icydock hot swaps in my machine, quarterly hdd backups, two offsite, two onsite. Various other backups too. I cant say this enough, do not, under any circumstance, rely on the internet.

Are you sure about that? At least around these parts (USA) external disks are cheaper than their internal counterparts. For example, many Seagate external disks actually pack a drive identical to their internal desktop drives, and yet they are cheaper, most probably due to some marketing decision that I don't get. In the end, the cheapest way to acquire the said disk is to buy the external version, and if you actually need to install it as an internal drive, just remove/saw off/break the external case. Not easy or convenient to do for everyone, but just saying, if I remember correctly we saved about $50 a piece at work a few months back like this.

That really depends on what you search for, I just searched and:
WD Green 1tb internal = £38.99
WD Elements 1tb portable = £44.99

OP:
Anyways, from what I have heard around the drives in external are not as good as internal ones, and via USB your not going to get SATA speeds.
But again that is also subjective, if you need storage you carry around a lot, then portable one may be best. If you have hot swap drives like me, then I would say internal is best. Also, different types of drive are better at certain things, i.e. ones that last a long time are good for backups, really fast ones are better for daily use - you wouldn't use SSD for backup would you?

I bought WD Elements Portable like a month ago. It's small, looks nice and feels like 'portable'. The problem is it seems to be very slow. I believe it's up to windows or something (but checked it on 2 different computer with same results) as my old Seagate (for 1/3 wd's price) was 2 times faster (up 60mb/s vs up to 30mb/s). I say it's a good hdd. Being fast or slow doesn't really matter as it's a storage drive, you're not going to use it as often as internal drive. Mine came with a nice case in the box. I suggest you to look for edition with it, you can save some money this way. I'm going to check out why is this drive not as fast as the old one. If you're interested, I'll send you a message if it's drive's or windows' fault.

Over here External HDD's are $579 and YahWeh help you if it tips over on the SOFT carpet and STAY THE HELL AWAY from TOSHIBA I bought 2 External HDD's and they were BOTH SCREWED!

It's USB 3.0 and still very slow?.
