tinyE: You're thinking of Martin Shkreli.
A short time ago he bought 3D Realms and decided that Duke Nukem 1 and 2 should start selling for $1500.00 a piece. GOG refused and he pulled the games.
Don't think so because I would have remembered the name.

I thought it was during the "xmas" sale.....

HereForTheBeer: Marketing, my dear. Sales are marketing. Lower the prices across the board once and you get a news post once. Lower them temporarily once per week and you get news posts once per week. That, and the other stores might bitch and insist on their own similar arrangements were gOg to switch from periodic discounts to fixed price drops for a large portion of the catalog.

Regarding the store-publisher details, I suspect these are handled a few different ways. Some publishers may have allowed for a hands-off approach, setting some parameters and gOg works within those, and others may require a more active permission process. My guess only. Maybe they've shared those details publicly but I don't recall them saying how it works.

And yes, fatigue. Which seems silly because A) you're being offered discounts, and B) it's voluntary. But still, sale burnout happens. I do, however, like the smaller weekly sales. While the titles change every week, the sale format itself is pretty stable and the number of games - 15-50 - feels more manageable. The big sale every 4 to 6 weeks, lasting 8-12 days? I'm mostly done with them at this point. Can't be bothered to again swim through 400+ titles, most of which have been on sale 3+ times already just since late October. But that's where the marketplace has gone.
I think the sale burnout occurs as a result of us noticing the fairly obvious fact that it's always the same titles that go on sale, most of which don't even get bought on sale 'cause only a few people ever wanted them. That said, there are games like Huniepop that almost everyone bought the first 3 or 4 sales it's in, but it still lands in almost every sale. Those people also manage to get the one random sale during sales as a result.

What kills me is the number of new releases on gog going on for another 10% sale but not landing on the top sellers in the right. The message is clear: sweeten the deals, 'cause if the initial price is too high, 10% isn't going to work unless it's a launch discount and you're preying on the excitement of new game. Seriously, these 10-15% sales aren't even worth mentioning as being on sale. 20% is at least semi-enticing for games that are 5-10 bucks, but when you're looking at a game who's base price is 50 USD or more, 25% is even a joke, 'cause that number still looks really large in the end. If you want to grab people with the whole "it's on sale!" thing, make it worth it, because people saw the big number to begin with and refrained, so they're going to keep seeing that big number and saying, well, see the image...

drmike: I recall one recent time where a staff member saying the publisher was unhappy with the listed sales price and they had it removed.

Unfortunately in this case a not-so-quick google search isn't finding the thread since there are too many threads about similar topics.

The other times, it's a customer saying that it was probably an unhappy publisher looking at the pricing that caused the unlisting.

"oh no, my game looks cheap!" Maybe that's what'll get you the sales, because the game actually isn't worth the asking price, despite you thinking so. Admit when you make a bad decision, like, seriously. If you can't figure out the math yourself before agreeing to put it on sale, you shouldn't be in this business. You should know what your price looks like on 50% off.

EDIT: Incase any dev might actually read this, I remember a few sales where everything on my wishlist was on sale, but having a rule that only if the game was 5 USD or less would i acknowledge a discount of less than 30%. I said to myself, "I don't make alot of money, so if they aren't going to make it really worth it, i do have over 400 games in my account already, and i'm probably only interested because it's got one or two mechanics that make it unique."

I assumed it was.

There's a British science fiction author whose name escapes me that got so ticked off at his American publisher one of his novels was only released in America as a leather bound hard cover for like over $100 back in the early 90s.

Allen Steele maybe?

We are getting way off topic here, but once while I was working in this small mom and pop bookstore up here, this guy comes in, picks up this coffee table book about lighthouses, says "See this cover, I took that picture."

"Great" I said, "Beautiful picture."

Suddenly he pulls out a Sharpy, signs the cover of the book, pulls out a roll of "autographed copy" stickers from his bag, my hand to god I am NOT MAKING THIS UP, slaps one on the cover, hands the books back over and says, "Here. Now I will require that you increase the price from $20 to $60."

Had two interesting book signings during my time:

Author and his wife bring their guitars and plays them in front of the store. Went very well but a few months later, we got a payment due notice from the RIAA for the "performance".

The other author pretty much ignores his table and spends like four hours walking the store, flipping thru books, and interacting with customers. Some customers thought he was a new employee.

What worries me is she posted that five hours ago, putting her drunk somewhere between 9 am and noon.

Now mind you, I spend 12 years getting loaded every day all day but it is something I will never get over and something I will never be able to make amends for.
