I'm the kind of person who might love a game or movie for its soundtrack alone. I'm sure there are some game examples of this, but for some reason I can't quite pinpoint any certain one.

For movies, The Underneath wasn't actually a horrible movie, but nothing special either. If it wasn't for its incredibly haunting soundtrack, I would have forgotten about that movie already. I always felt the soundtrack would have deserved an even better and more recognized movie.

One game comes to mind: there's quite a big discrepancy between the poor and simple gameplay, and quite good soundtrack, of Canabalt.

Also the more I think about it, on the Amiga it was even more common that I liked the music, but didn't care that much for the rest of the game necessarily. For example:

Obliterator
Menace
Phantasm
Hybris

True for many older PC games too (incidentally, these two are Amiga => PC ports; a coincidence?):

Lethal Weapon
Utopia

The poor Follin Bros got stuck with so many LJN games that it becomes sad.

This man could make the NES sing!

But nobody wants to play Silver Surfer.
Double Dragon Neon has a pretty cool soundtrack while the game itself is pretty bad.

Sanjuro: I liked the music in Archangel though the game itself is mostly meh. A real shame I didn't save the soundtrack back then.
I like that game. Something about the way the narrative and the world is presented, it reminds me of my teenage years when I would play similar games even if back then I would agree gameplay is at best slightly above average but that didn't really matter.

Have you tried unpacking the soundtrack?
Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest is definitely a contender here. I enjoyed the game a lot more than I should have because of the soundtrack alone.

Turok 2 deserves an honourable mention as while it definitely wasn't a bad game, the save points were waaaaayyyy too far apart souring the game experience. However, the music for the first two levels was awesome.

Tomb Raider: AOD. Got this game with a sound blaster sound card, tried the game, Soundtrack was excellent but the game....................well, you guys already know. To this date, it was the ONLY game I have ever had in my many years of gaming that I threw right in the rubbish bin.

I finished that game and liked some of the gameplay aspects (reloading your gun while the clip's not empty not being a good idea among those) but the overall impression was really underwhelming. It didn't help that it took me an hour to figure what I'm supposed to do with the final boss (yeah, in retrospective using the Blade of Light seems kind of logical, but I had no idea you're supposed to hit that... thing).

No, I haven't. And now I'm not sure if I'll be able to find the disk at all, it's quite likely I gave it away to someone. Oh well.

P.S. The game's on Community Wishlist, in case you're interested.

Telika:
Star Fox Assault. Such a grand orchestral score for such a simple and meh game:

Is it strange if I prefer assault over 64?

I installed my ripped copy but I couldn't open the PAK-file with PAK explorer or Dragon Unpacker for that matter. Pity, I want to listen to the soundtrack as I got curious, I couldn't find it on YouTube either. I never completed the game but I did make some progress last summer I believe. I voted on the wishlist too, hopefully if it arrives here they will have the soundtrack with it.

yes very strange
I like "Wayne's world" a lot, however I understand people would find it with a limited reach ( music, videogames and TV industry, media gurus, young businnessmen, visual perception of people ... who cares about all that ??).

Nonetheless, Wayne's world soundtrack is a really great testimony of the early nineties. The only soundtrack I really paid attention to in fact.
