Ingsoc85: Don Quixote by Saavedra
Either this is some other Don Quixote, or you got the author wrong. It was written by de Cervantes.

zeogold: Isn't there a famous collection put together by Mortimer Adler and some other guy about "essential" Western reading?

Edit: Great Books of the Western World, collected by Mortimer Adler and Robert Hutchins.
I attended two schools that use that list as the core of their classical education curriculum.
I'd also recommend the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature:
Water Margin (aka Outlaws of the Marsh)
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Journey to the West
Dream of the Red Chamber

Though I've only read the first two so far, be sure to take into account that there are large differences between different translated versions. I recommend C. H. Brewitt-Taylor's translation for Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Sidney Shapiro's translation of Outlaws of the Marsh.

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was the full name the author used as an adult.

You can't be serious?

Asbeau: Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
My full name is Kleetus de Kleetus.
I see you've got Machiavelli's The prince already on the list...you might just as well add the Discorsi which show Machiavelli's republican side.
And you just might as well read Livy then (whose first decade the Discorsi are based on)...all of it :-) Other ancient historians like Polybios, Thucydides or Ammianus might also be interesting.

Cool, I didn't know that. I've only ever heard him referred to as de Cervantes, so this is good to know, thanks!

SCPM: Water Margin (aka Outlaws of the Marsh)
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
For gamers:
Suikoden RPG series is based on the "setting" of Water Margin.
(The story in those games are unrelated with the book.)

Romance of the Three Kingdoms have the same name strategy game series, published by KOEI.
Its Japanese game name is 三國志(Sangokushi), which is in fact the name of an official historical record.
The name "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is the translation of 三國演義, which is a novel based on 三國志(the historical record).
I knew the OP would deliver. It's like an incel's mating call, instantly recognizable by birdwatchers everywhere.

What has reading books got to do with "incels"? Is reading books now bad and does automatically make you a misogynist virgin nutcase like that Elliott Rodgers spree killer????

Reading books is no longer cool. It is much cooler to burn books and oppose free speech.

Also, I had to look up the term "incel". I am not a hipster and never heard of this term (nor am I a birder so I had no idea if it was a real bird) - that and the fact that not getting some has never been a problem.

I don't think "incels" are hipsters...they're some sort of subculture of obsessive male virgins. They were in the news after that Isla vista shooting by Elliot Rodger who self-identified as incel and had written a long manifesto in which he complained about women not wanting to have sex with him...so he had to kill them...
I don't see what reading books (especially serious ones like the writings of the US founding fathers) has got to do with "incels". If anything, playing computer games should be more problematic in that regard.

Don't even try to figure out what goes on in Starmaker's head. It's a really disturbing place defined by paranoia and hatred.
