Maybe some resolution issue? the dialogue box didn't appear? Can you take a screenshot?

if you still having issues with older versions of EFMI or Grim Fandango you can always try Residual Virtual Machine

I've heard wonderful things about that but I don't play EFMI since 2001 and 2006 (my first run and my comeback for good memories)

Could you please tell me what you mean with "what happened to the function menu"?

Edit: I tried it myself now.
Press "F1" to enter the option menu if you would want to see the default keys used or change those.
To kick the coals you need to do the following.

SPOILERS

1) Turn your character to the brazier and press "U"(se) - you will knock it over.
2) Turn your character to the hot coals and press "P"ick up - to "carry" the coals.
3) Turn your character to the loaded canon and press enter (default action) when the appropriate action is shown. Be aware that there are two canons with only one being loaded therefore displaying the option to kick the coals.

Yes, the controls are a bit strange but that's how it should work.

MarkoH01: You do know that EFMI is now supported by the regular ScummVM which is the version that is used on the GOG version as well? So using ResidualVM here won't make much of a difference.
What is your source for this?

It isn't on the supported games list page, and the engine doesn't appear to be in the source code, so how could the game possibly be supported by the "regular" ScummvM?

Also, from ScummVM wiki:
"Compatibility
As it is a 3D adventure game, Escape from Monkey Island is out of scope for ScummVM. However, it is partially playable in the sister project of ScummVM, ResidualVM."

"Will never be supported.
Use ResidualVM"

So sorry - I confused it with "Curse of Monkey Island" which is in fact using ScummVM 2.0. I just tested EFMI myself and despite of what I said it is NOT using any ScummVM at all (not even ResidualVM) in the GOG version. Thank you for noticing it before false information will be spreaded. I deleted my former (wrong) statement to prevent further confusion.
