Indeed, Earth Siege 2 was a Windows program (if there was a DOS version or a way to run it as a DOS application I'm not aware of it). May be quite tough to get it to run on newer OSes. The original game was a native DOS program, though, so you shouldn't have any trouble to make it run via DOSBox.

I haven't played it much yet but my first impressions admittedly weren't great. Still, I thought it just doesn't have a good start. I wasn't aware that people generally "hate" it.

And this thread reminds me: we still need G-Nome. I really liked that one. As well as Heavy Gear. I haven't played Heavy Gear much but I have very fond memories of it (at least the second one, I think that's the one I played).

Yah people using Google to find old games is probably the main reason people come here. Just like with most things on the net. ;)

The search engine here is like using a random generator aligned to bringing mostly old topics to the front. Maybe it goes for most posts first or something? First topic on a subject generally tend to get most replies. Maybe. I just had a gut feeling about that so I pulled it out of my ass.

Edit: I get it! You mean Google doesn't update GOGs forum much so to speak. Heh that's a trade mark of google. They need to webcrawl more often.

I had problems getting the retail Heavy Gear to run on modern machines. It went something like this:

- The vanilla (buggy) Heavy Gear I was able to run on Windows XP, and possibly even Windows 7. I only tried it out though, I didn't play longer without patching the game.

- I updated the game with the latest official patch (it was quite a good patch, even improved the graphics somewhat, e.g. a better looking sky), and after that it wouldn't work even on XP, let alone 7.

So I ended up playing it in Windows 98SE. I don't know what it was in the patch that made the game incompatible with newer Windows.

Hey guys, I'm a huge fan of the original Starsiege, I used to play it endlessly on my mom's crappy NT work computer which had blazing fast DSL for the time, I had endless amounts of fun. I probably had the best internet on any given server at the time but could only run it at about 20 frames a second when the action got tough due to the ol' Compaq. The multiplayer was insanely rich and varied, with 32 players, amazing maps, mods including crazy racing mods, wonderful clans/squads like the Birds of Prey, MIB, Mercenaries and more..

Sadly it doesn't look like GOG or anyone else has much interest in the series.

The good news is that a patched abandonware, multiplayer-only version of Starsiege is available, which is still 100% playable online, and a small community still plays! Just google "starsiege 2014 complete" and you'll find a forum with the link. I'm sure GOG forum doesn't want me posting to grey abandonware so I'll leave the instructions at that, but rest assured it is a safe download from a devoted community and it works perfectly, in fact there are many enhancements and things like skinpacks included.

Please join back into the multiplayer! It's as fun today as it was almost 20 years ago!

Also Sierra deserves a great deal of applause for the rich, wonderful fiction that Starsiege boasted. That intro video still gets me going all these years later, and the lexicon they developed for the Cybrids was just superb.

Wow, interesting downloads there...not a zipped folder, but a CD burn. And still unlikely to work in modern systems.

But if they're interested in giving these games away for free, maybe they'll still turn them loose to GOG at some point.

Earthsiege 1 is a DOS game so DOSBox is your friend.

As for Earthsiege 2, I have no idea. Surely you will need XP or something running on a virtual machine to install the game (since all Sierra installers from that time were 16-bit installers), I don't know whether the game itself will work fine, though.

Hm, Avast AV hits me with a malware warning (File Rep: Metagen) when I try to download any of the installers. >_>

Starsiege disc doesn't include Tribes despite it's being called StarsiegeAndStarsiegeTribes.iso

As with anything off the internet, its use at own risk. However, I've used both of them for quite some time and haven't had any issues.
