HunchBluntley: Just so you're aware, Masters of the Broken World is apparently "just" a 3D remake of Genesis, not a sequel. Kind of like what Mount & Blade: Warband did for Mount & Blade, only more so.

Well darn. So basically it's the same game with upgraded graphics? Well, I suppose it's possible the upgraded graphics might do it for some folks. I tend not to care too much about graphics. Although there is one game I tried playing and just...... couldn't. Sid Meier's Colonization. Man I couldn't even tell the difference in the units or ship types the graphics were so bad on that one.
Get your facts straight. It is not "just" a graphical update. They also randomly sprinkled a few thousand bugs into the source code so that the player can enjoy the suspense of an imminent crash after each turn. The hint is in the name.

I actually played Masters of the Broken World before playing Genesis.
For me the differences are significant enough to make both of them worthwile, the experiences were different.

However I could not get the DRM-free version of Broken World to work. I did not buy the GOG version but the Humble Store version, which is also labelled as DRM-free. It might even be same version as GOG (I know some Humble games are "GOG games"). I say this because of how many GOG:ers struggled to get their version to work.

Anyway, I had to play it on Steam, since the Humble version came with a Steam key as well. So at least I could play it.

'Yes', it's a fun series, I hope they make more of them ... if they can improve on the technical quality.
Games of this type offer fun combination of different genres, resulting in epic Fantasy adventures.
Very tricky to learn though.

* Unlike pure action gameplay, the game does not play smoothly because it keeps pausing all the time.
* Unlike turn-based gameplay, there's no rhythm to the battle. (In turn-based games, there is a nice rhythm as the game switches between command entry and command execution, with (in some games) an enemy turn phase as well, and those changes are predictable.)
hmmm, you know the rhythm thing, you might be onto something. never thought about it like that.

The turn-based thing for me is just more of an annoyance thing; battles don't pause for turns in real life! (i KNOW the absurdity of this b/c video games...). It's the same reason I can't stand musicals; no one spontaneously breaks out into choreographed song and dance. :)

You better not play Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure then; it has *both* turn-based combat and people spontaneously breaking out into song.

I do as well. The way I see it, it combines the worst of action and turn-based gameplay:

Welcome to the best game ever. I have played this for a year non stop when I found it. Then when you have enough, you can spend another year with the real second game: Eador: New Horizons.
Eador easily surpassed my previous all time favourites, Homm, Imperialism and Civ. Also it was made by one dude and cost 3,99, WTF?

Never needed a manual, the game is pretty simple to learn, and the right click infos are extensive. Your spell scroll is probably circle 2-4 and your hero can only do circle 1.

It's nowhere near as bad as it was at launch. There's been a large amount of patching done since then.

OldFatGuy: Okay, so as I (and at least one other poster) mention, NO MANUAL, and I'm at my first frustrating point. I have two spell scrolls. I right click on them and they tell me I must go to the library to enter them into my magical slots.

That's not the game he has -- that's the graphically upgraded/expanded version. Admittedly, it might have a lot of info that would be more-or-less applicable to Genesis, too, but I know I wouldn't want to just assume that a remake had kept every detail the same.
Unfortunately, the only major (English-language) guides I've found for the first game are woefully incomplete/bare-boned, and likely more-or less abandoned.

Well, if nobody can find English manual, but someone links me to Russian manual, or at least people state they are interested in this - I can see what I can do within a scope of few weeks. People state so far that "manual" never actually existed and have pointed to online faq, which I can translate to wikia if there is an interested group.
Broken worlds seem to be already covered.

Last night I found this(which has had some recent activity, but which seems to be focused mostly on MotBW) when searching. Not sure how much that helps.

I only played Genesis, and it ate a month of my time or two of my time - 314 hours on record. Does get samey after a while, but boy was I addicted. I'm scared of going back to it.
