Anyway... yeah, a second hand good old drive... I've been thinking that too. But what about it's usage history? It sounds as much as a 'sure thing' as buying a new drive.

pds41: He means buy a new, old drive - i.e. look for something still in shrink wrap from 15 odd years ago.

To be honest, given the cost of that strategy, I'd just buy a standard new one and replace it when it breaks.
Oh I see, I never considered that shrink wrapped (or whatever, essentially never used) drives could actually be found on the second hand market.
I mean, do people actually do that (15 years ago)... buy a DVD drive, stock the box somewhere and sell it more than a decade later?

Since we are on the subject of DVD drives maybe someone here could help me out. I have a LG GH24NS95 that refuse to read some discs for no reasons.

I can never be sure if it will read or not a disc without trying, it does that for absolutely everything. It doesn't matter if the disc is scratched or in perfect condition. It can read the discs 1 & 2 of a DVD box set without problem but refuse to read the others. Some PlayStation 1&2 discs can be read and use with an emulator some not. It also may or may not read a burned disc.

I really don't know what to do with it anymore...

Has is been used a lot in its lifetime?* Whatever your answer, I don't think anything can be done about it, except buy a new drive.

*It could be the laser that's wearing out.

AB2012: An early death could just be "luck of the draw" rather than an indicator of brand quality as they are normally one component that outlasts everything else 2-3x over. I have an LG BH10LS30 (BD-RE) bought in 2010 and it's still going strong. ASUS, Lite-On are good brands. Good modern optical drive reviews are hard to come by but DVD-RW drives are so cheap you could always simply buy an extra one as a spare.
I agree with luck of the draw. In the past years I also had many different DVD drives that broke on me within a few years. But 8 years ago I also bought a BD-RE drive that just keeps going and going like an Energizer bunny. Happened to be a LG BH10LS30 as well. Those seem to have been really good drives.

That's the same one I have. Managed to nab it when it was still $149. On the pricier side but it's been brilliant so far. Came with the latest edition of PowerDVD as well.

Happens for many things - often called "new old stock" or NOS - and is usually stuff that has been sitting unsold in storage for many years (but, of course, it also happens that you buy something because you think you'll need it and then never actually open the box until you eventually realise you can just as well sell it "new").

Here are some things you can do:

Update your UEFI (or BIOS if your computer is that old)!
Install/update the motherboard's drivers!
Update the firmware for the LG, if there is any newer! That is on the actual drive.
Open the thing with a screwdriver and carefully remove any hair that has got into it and then blow any dust off! Do not touch the lens!

If those things did not help, there is not much else to do than to buy another one. I still have a few left from when I bought a pile of used ones.

teceem: Right now I have an LG GH24NSC0. I have it since 2016 and despite moderate use, it stopped reading DVD discs and gives timing errors when ripping CDs (EAC)...
Given that certain CD/DVD "copy protection" schemes worked by creating errors on media (*cough* Starforce *cough*), this could be a side effect.

As such, just to rule out a rogue filter driver, I would suggest using Device Manager to uninstall your DVD drive then choose Detect New Hardware to get it re-installed. That should eliminate filter drivers, if any are causing the problem. If it does then work, you can be confident that some copy control nonsense was the culprit.

Try to find a really old drive.... i keep a 30 year old disk drive which always reads disks that any new drive will error out on.

Its as if the old disk drive is too old to see the errors, so, ignorance is bliss!
