somehow I don't think this thread is going to end well.
I want to say that he's so much of a parody of masculinity, people would just take him as a satirical character.
It sucks that I even have to point that out though. And I'm still not sure if it would fly.

Even still, I'm sure some people will be outraged. I think for the past couple of years, people have just liked to choose to be outraged by anything. Especially if there is already a big group doing so. OR they see it on hot trash tv channels.

Despite my first sentences I'm gonna say no, it wouldn't work out very well. And i'm positive if there was a game that used a female character with equally ridiculous representation, that game would get a ton more hate than Duke. Which is itself sexist, but that double standard is prominent.

Yea let's see how this thread pans out. I like these topics, but it's hard to convey shit just through post by post talking-over-each-other format.

Not everyone will understand that he's a satirical character.

Some folks actually believed that iHop was going to spend millions on renaming their company, replacing all of the furniture, lighting, uniforms, etc.

The usual SJW idiots will be butthurt and the games press will be exploding with articles about toxic masculinity, power fantasies and other such bullshit. Regardless if its made as satire or not, there will be people with enough freetime to whine about it on every social media.

Obviously, and regardless of whether it ''works'' or not, the developers should create a sexist action hero if they really want to. I don't think anything ever gets to a point of ''not working'' until it stops being fun, and with enough humour and good levels, a properly 3D Duke can be as good as the originals.

Doom 2016 took the risk of not making a cover based shooter with health regen and slow movement and still succeeded, although most people would say such a game wouldn't ''work'' in this day and age.

And... Before I even get into this thread, I'm just going to bid it adieu.

Well, Trump is kind of like a Duke Nukem character and he got elected, so there seems to be an audience for that kind of masculinity. So I think a lot of people would be interested in such a game.

Ofc such a game could be made now if the developers has balls and don't give in and run with the tail between their legs as soon as complaints starts, whatever you do there's always someone somewhere who will hate what you do and trying their damnest to ruin your day but neither the devs nor publishers should care about them.

I believe that developers should have no creative restraints and be able to create what they want, develop a murder/ enslave men simulator if you want, do your same sex dating game if you want or make all women enemies if you prefer that , i don't care at all.

Some games will absolutely be in poor taste and other games will probably manage to disgust even me which is not easy but i don't have to buy the game if i find it disturbing and i have no intention to police other people either.

I can certainly understand some people being uncomfortable with certain themes but some are just over sensitive like they have been shielded their whole lives and likes screaming everytime they don't get their will through.

The reaction to Duke Nukem Forever really surprised me, because I took it as parody (just as I did with 3D). To me the character was always a joke about 80's action flicks and whatnot. Taking it seriously kind of blew my mind, I would never, ever think to do that. Our current political climate is what it is though.
He always was this parodied over the top exaggeration of the muscle bound world saving action hero. But for some odd reason in the last 5-10 or so years outrage culture gotten more dominance than it should so yeah, stupid people might actually kill off a good new DN while most likely abusing social justice to boost their OC egos disregarding any damage they do to actual social justice while doing so.

I hope no woman boards a bus with you.
duke nukem character in todays climate
I think he'd do just fine in the warming climate. Wasn't he already wearing a tank top? If worse came to worst, he could swap his pants out for cutoffs.

It's not even about the climate. He was entertaining for his time, but now his played out like a joke told one time too many. The audiences have moved on to new pastures.
Sure, he can be done well. Like in Duke 3d, not like in Duke Nukem Forever.

Duke 3D's reaction to women sexually assaulted by aliens: "Damn it."
DNF's reaction: "Looks like you got fucked!"

A GOOD new Duke would be fine. DNF deservedly got shit for being shit. Unfortunately Gearbox controls the IP now so I don't expect a good Duke game until it passes to another publisher/developer.

As for there being no market for it... bullshit. The new Doom was well received because it was a great game.
