I liked the first two-part episode. I was sceptical of the reboot for a few reasons and I love both the original cartoon and the Carl Barks/Don Rosa comics. But the result is, at least going by the pilot, better than I was expecting. It doesn't have the same feel as the classic series, but then again that might be a good thing. It's better fot it to be it's own thing than just a copy of what's already been done superbly.
What I liked:
- Giving the nephews more personality is definately interesting
- The implied backstory between Scrooge and Donald has a lot of potential
- There's quite a few legitimately funny moments
- while I don't like some design choices, it has it's own style and the animation is really good. And I'm endlessly grateful they didn't go CGI
What I disliked
-The theme is defiantely worse than the original, and overall the music is not nearly as memorable. The original had some superb pieces, this (so far) had nothing.
- I know it's always been this way, but Donald's voice is a pain in the ass. In a cartoon where there are actuall conversations happening, and not just slapstick, it's downright intolerable. They should have dialed it down a little.
- I still can't get used to Tennant as Scrooge. He sounds way to young. Ironically enough, the other scottish Doctor Who actor, Peter Capaldi, would have been a far better, pretty much perfect choice.
-Why isn't Duckworth around?
On the fence about
-Webby and Mrs Beakly are essentially entirely new characters, and I'm not sure if I like them yet. I get why they went the way they did, but Webby seems way too much like the boys now, so much less "useful".
-the "mystery" teased at the end of the episode. In itself it might seem interesting, but the show already feels very much like "Ducktales by the way of Gravity Falls", and what is teased at the end there feels like we might actually be ripping the Falls wholesale.
