As you might be aware, GOG curators recently said "Please, please, please go shop at our competitors!"

Being a nice guy, I did as they asked - and I have returned with links! ;)

These games look interesting to me, and the developers and publishers are willing to sell them DRM-free.

No promises - I haven't played them yet - but most are rather cheap during the current spring sale.

Out of these I have only played Valley of the Wind 1 and The Floor is Jelly.

Valley of the Wind is an extremely complex game. I played about 5 hours of it. These were basically only tutorial and I only understood half of what I was supposed to do, why I was there in this world and why the world reacted to my actions the way it did. I do understand that once you get the gist of it, it's supposed to be a very interesting game, but I had to give up due to a lack of feedback from the game if I was doing anything right. That's why I also never tried the second game.

The Floor is Jelly starts out as a very cute and interesting platformer with nice puzzle jumping sections. Towards the end, however, it turns into some kind of psychedelic fever dream where you have to glitch your way through the levels (which is intended by the creators as I understood it). Up to that point it is indeed fun.

"Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet" is a great little game, I played it about 2 years ago & had a nice time with it. Out of curiosity, does anyone know how often DRM-free builds are updated in Humble Store? Is it "GOG-often"? I remember browsing through my library over there & judging by some of the dates for relatively "new" games I got the feeling they were kind of ... forgotten :)

Yeah, updates for DRM-free builds seem to happen occasionally or else are forgotten by the developer, and there really is not much you can go by to find out how up to date a game is there before you buy. I had two instances where I friendly contacted the developer of the game and asked about a Humble update once I had found out that it was way behind the current Steam version. One said they would look into it though nothing happend, the other said they would update the Humble Version and indeed did. That's why I only buy games on Humble if they are not on GOG, if they are cheap and if I really want to try them out.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the ones you've played! :)

I'm curious, too. I've only bought a few games from Humble, and I haven't checked if the builds were current in a long time. Bullet Witch was updated a couple days after the Steam version, but that's a new release (or recent re-release, to be more accurate), and it's Xseed, so that isn't useful regarding indies.

Bioshock is available drm free there.

So is the TinManGaming Fighting Fantasy, and some other choose your own adventure:

Humble rarely update or patch anything, mainly being focused on Steam key sales - which is what all there giveaways, and most of their catalog is.

Not completely true. They DO update games - but you'll have to remind them that there's an update for the game and they will contacdt the devs asap. At least that's my expeerience with them.

They also still have 1343 games at the moment they offer DRM-free so while it's true the majority of their games (about 6000) is Steam only I still do think that they haven't completely given up on DRM-free yet.

Oh man, "Hexcells"! I was addicted to this game :) I never play puzzle games for more than 5 minutes, but this game got me hooked for hours! "Lyne" is very nice too.
I could have sworn I checked that Hexcells wasn't available DRM-Free. Eventualy I gave in, and got it on STEAM on some of its sales... Madalin is getting UPSET!!!
I'll throw in a few of my favorite DRM-free Humble games that haven't been mentioned and aren't on GOG:

The Stanley Parable

Saturday Morning RPG

And if you're a subscriber to Humble Monthly, I'd recommend downloading The End is Nigh from the Trove. It doesn't seem to be offered DRM-free from the store.

A word of warning about the "DRM-free" part of Humble Store.

Since they mostly sell Steam keys or Steam keys along with downloads, they don't give a crap about keeping DRM-free versions up to date. You may think GOG is bad for updates, but the Humble Store is way worse.

Also, much more alarmingly they have on occasion removed the DRM-free version of a game from everyone's accounts leaving only a Steam key. This happened to me with Black Hole and luckily I noticed and demanded a refund. I got it because it was a recent purchase and I complained shortly after they removed it. I think if it had been a longer time span on either/both counts then I wouldn't have been so lucky.

So buy away with the following caveats:
1. Immediately back your games up because they might disappear.
2. Don't expect updates, you'll likely just be told to use the steam key to get the up to date version.

Many games in Humble Bundle have DRM-free version, and their tag/search system is super easy to use.

You can list all the DRM-free games there, with quite some useful options.

UPDATE:
I made a list of DRM-free video games digital distributors:

SirPrimalform: A word of warning about the "DRM-free" part of Humble Store.
All you said is 100% totes true. If you think GOG is bad at getting recent updates, at least they seem to try, whereas Humble doesn't move a frigging finger.

Hoooooooowever, the flipside of that completely hands-off policy is that developers and publishers have total control over what you can download from your Humble library, without needing any supervision or control from Humble's part. So whenever you find an outdated DRM-free build there, just completely bypass Humble support and go straight to the dev/pub. Most of the time I've gotten the desired update in a matter of hours (if not minutes).
