TrevorJones: Ok, its solved. How do I "mark"it? I now have more information than I need, and can add Tzar, Cleopatra, .. to my Xmas list. Have to keep the 98 machine for for Kohan, and others. Thanks, all of you for information and facts I didn't know I needed.
If you hover your mouse cursor anyone else's post but yours, you should see a button labeled "mark as solution" appear; simply click this button on the post you think best answered your question. (Note that you can only do this for one post, though.) This will mark the topic as "SOLVED" in the forum, and the first post of the thread will then display a link to whichever post you marked (in case someone else has the same question later and finds your thread). It will also give the person who posted the solution a little bump to their community rep number (displayed under their avatar on the left), and will hopefully reduce the number of people that will later wander into the topic and post answers which are no longer needed. : ) Sorry in advance if I over-explained.

TrevorJones: I have to maintain three machines, Windows 98, XP, and 10 to cater for all the ages of games I like to play. Is it true that GOG removes DRM, so that even the older games will play on a modern O/S?
Can I also ask, since the prices on GOG are in dollars, are the games playable on UK systems?
If both of these are affirmative, I can become GOG's avid customer, and obsolete at least one computer.
Thanks for help.
Have you tried the free games, like Beneath the Steel Sky? You can get an overall idea of how GOG games work with those. Can I also ask, since the prices on GOG are in dollars, are the games playable on UK systems?

Just to make sure: GOG games are not guaranteed to run on old unsupported versions of Windows like XP or 98, even if the games were originally released for those. The games might run, but the tweaks used to make them run on modern systems might break them on older systems.

Just in case someone did not point that out yet. While GOG offers most games with removed DRM that by itself is not a sufficient condition for compatibility with modern OS. There might still be other issues. Have a look at the game card of a game on the GOG website. If GOG says that a game is compatible with a certain OS then you can return it if it isn't - it's their responsibility then. If they don't state it, you can try, but you are on your own then.

the necro post was done by a spammer, which is removed by gOg. If you check the post numbers, it jumps from #34 to #36. #35 is deleted.

That is right, as removing DRM is piracy, and piracy is illegal.
What's discussed in this (2 years old) topic is, despite the title implying otherwise, the buying of DRM-free games and the question if they can run on any system.
Removing DRM for yourself is against most laws and EULA's, but buying a game a publisher decided to sell without DRM on this DRM-free store (*) is legal. I hope that clarifies.
(*) though there's some store practices, mostly involving multi-player and the game GWENT, that's considered DRM by some forummites, GOG used to apply it's DRM-free principle much stricter in the past.
