Exoanthrope: Gah! That was driving me crazy! I knew I saw it somewhere. I was confusing it with some retro-styled indie game I saw on sale recently, but I couldn't find it. It's been forever since I touched an Ultima game.
Hmm, was it Tales of Maj'Eyal (TOME4)? I remember something that looked like a zorn in the mountain regions. They could pass through solid rock no problem. I don't recall the name, though. Maybe zorn, maybe xorn, maybe something else. Ultima IV and the first Wizardry were the games that really drew me in as a kid, so I can remember more than I should about them. Plus, my brother has an insane memory and can barf obscure text at from either at me all day.

Nah, it was something like Eldritch, but I already have that one. I think I might have just been mixing up multiple games in my memory.

My dad was really into Wizardy, but admittedly I didn't get into them until they had better graphics from 6 and on(yet I still liked old Ulitma and ANSI games like ZZT). 7 was our favourite, and I still remember when we bought the Gold edition and were so excited about it. We cheated and printed out maps on dozens of papers and taped them across a whole wall. Good times.

Way to raise the bar! That's super skillfully done. I recognize the girl though I've never played the game. I won't guess until it's less hectic at home. I expect someone else will recognize it quickly, as she looks just like she does!
edit: And I appreciate the bright white edge. Chris Van Dusen, a children's book author we read here often, does that, too. It really makes characters stand out, even when subtly done. It's one of those effects I've had in mind for a while, should I ever get around to polishing a picture!

Thanks grimwerk, the white edge is a rather gimmicky design element from 1960s stylized poster art which is based on art nouveau but puts things more bluntly - almost returning to the simplicity of medieval stained glass church windows where the edges were a structural necessity. It's funny how styles shift over time from simple to complex and back to simple and then complex again.
I first wanted to go for a more subtle look as in the 1960/70s movie posters where the white edge was often replaced by rim light which looks more organic and realistic, even if it was very often exaggerated and stylized (along with the colors) . The faces were usually in shadow and rim lighting greatly helped with separating them from the background. The reference I was working from (the game cover art) was a 3D render with flat lighting rather than the dramatic lighting a lot of spaghetti western posters had so I decided to take the easy way out and just make a bold edge all around rather than make up rim lighting - it also saved a lot of time. I don't really like to do things this way as it's not particularly skillful but when you're hard pressed to finish a piece in a short time, it's very convenient! I was also listening to spaghetti western soundtracks to provide the right motivation & rhythm :)
Attached a black & white threshold filter version to show how the white edge makes the subject identifiable even in its most primitive abstraction - minus color and modeling - and even though the white edge is a cheap ass trick, it definitely saves silhouette recognition when foreground and background element are too close in value. Sometimes, letting elements melt is the intention but for flyers, posters and forum guessing games readability is key.

Are you a comic artist? Perhaps i'm recognizing that image from the actual game but that gives me so much vibes to the comics that i used to read (Preacher or Y the last man), perhaps it's the painting style. As for the game, no clue, i'm sure i haven't played it but i would say that i've seen it in some magazine, perhaps around 2001...
