Sure, here is another hint. This is a classic DOS Side-Scroller, whose game engine went on to create several other DOS games, including some Religious ones.

I think in the U.S. we knew them as The Snorks, an attempt to capitalize on the success of the Smurfs.

Actually, I think I was wrong, I was thinking of a different game, Puzzle Bobble. This one was an amiga game though, wasn't it? A Tower Climber?

It was on arcade and various other platforms and JoeSapphire is indeed correct. It is "Dig Dug". I recognized the first picture immediately.
