What do I do. Other games I bought do not present this problem.

What are your computer specs?
Do you have a dedicated sound card or are you using on-board sound?
Where did you install the game?
Did you install via Galaxy?
Are you getting any error messages?
Does the game work as expected other than the sound issue?
First of all, thank you for responding. I've already searched the forums and found nothing of use there, and yes, I did file a ticket to GOG already.

I did use Galaxy to install the game, so it got installed in the default folder. I even re-installed the game but to no avail. Apart from the sound the game works flawless and I do not get any error message whatsoever. Apart from DDDA I own about 30 other games on GOG and all are working well....

My specs are:

Intel i5-6300HQ skylake processor
NVDIA GTX960M GPU
Windows 10 64-bit OS
DirectX 12

as far as I know I am using Conexant SmartAudio HD

I hope this info will help. Sorry but I'm a bit of a compu noob.
When you say default folder, what folder is that? The default folder in Galaxy can be changed (and should be if you are installing under your windows folders)
C:/ Program Files (x86)/ GOG Galaxy/ Games/ DDDA

You should change that. You may find games will have issues if they're installed there because Windows is picky about permissions in Program Files folders. Change it to something like C:/Games. I don't know if this is the cause of your sound issues, but it's a better place to install your games overall.
Ok, I will try. I guess there is no harm in trying to re-install again. I'll let you know.
Re-installed the game in a different directory. Same result, no sound. Poked around in the files a bit, but could not find a config or ini.file. However I did find a folder with some some cutscene videos which when I play them have perfect sound??
