Is it as good as the reviews make out or are they slightly overinflated?
The thing with Dragon's Dogma is that you have to form your own opinion. There are people that love it and hate it equally. I played it on PS3 years ago and loved the first hours, but after you unlock more locations and have to slowly walk to them, it's annoying. But honestly the main thing I hated was timed quests. You can't take your time to explore, or have fun killing things because you will permanently lose side-quests.

If they had fast travel and unlimited time for side-quests, I would've loved this game even more. I couldn't bring myself to beat it after like 8 hours.

I honestly don't recall many timed quests. I'm not sure I'd say the game lives up to all the hype, but I had a really good time with it, and felt it was more than worth the money I spent on it (bought it on release here on GOG for something like $17 CDN). I wouldn't let the worry of timed quests turn you off if this looks like your kind of game. There's plenty of stuff to do in it and it's a pretty good actiony RPG IMO.

the dark arisen release fixed the fast travel issue, i still prefer base game for that amazing intro music. a rough rpg but very much fun to play.

i had a easier experience thanks to having good high level pawns

I'm trying hard to remember any timed quests and the only thing I do remember are stuff like some flowers which could only picked on day/night & some quests which blocks off if you progress into another stage of the game.

And "fast travel" is done by magic travel; you will have next to none at start but its better than traditional FT in the end since you can place the port stones to any place you desire (pretty helpful with those occasional annoying escort quest; quite satisfying to resolve those in 30 sec when properly prepared :P ).

If you like fantasy action-RPGs with a good deal of customization and don't mind some occasional weirdness or eastern over-the-topness you probably will like that one. If you played Divinity 2 this one could be best compared to it (- the dragon morph + customizable assistant [pawn]).

Thanks for the infeed but timed quests is not an option for me and a game I refuse to buy because of this.

you can play with the offsider from anyone in your mate list... having a strong npc along is a massive help to anyone playing single player
Hm, I don't remember any timed quests either, unless you count the one about catching a thief but IIRC that one always resets if you don't manage to catch him.

I have only played Dark Arisen, so can only provide my thoughts on that. I played through the first time, tried to do everything possible including collecting the 100 tokens. This was a bit over the top, so if your a completionist bear in mind it will take you a long time. Still on the first run through, the game was very entertaining. The fighting in it, jumping all over beasties was really cool, combat was a joy. Experienced no real life changing bugs or anything it all worked, and was pretty smooth. The ability to change out your character into fighter/mage/archer at any point (later on in game) was pretty cool, and necessary to get all the tokens. Storyline was average, can't remember much about it though it did keep things moving. End of the day the big seller is the fast slick combat, so if you like that you will love this. I found the expansion dungeon very hard, even with a high level character.

I re-installed some months back for a play through and only really got to the Ogre. Really felt the "I have done this all before" quite strongly so gave up. So I would say here, replayability is limited. The only real choice you have characterwise at the start is rogue, warrior, mage, so your options are limited there. Later on you can change this across the three, and dual, but even so, character building is a bit limited.

In terms of is it worth £8, I would say yes. The first run through was hours, it was very long, and has lots of content including the new super hard dungeon. It was very entertaining and runs well, but does lack the depth for replayability. Would I buy it £8, heck yes!
I haven't beaten it yet, but it has serious atmosphere and some of the best combat I've ever experienced.

I definitely haven't played a game like it before. And that's a huge plus in my book.

I also don't remember any time side quests. I don't much care if I missed some, though. The game is strong on it's story quests and the side quests are just okay, usually.

I highly recommend.

i used to have dragons dogma on my ps3 and i have it here as well and i personally think its awesome.

great combat, occasionally fiddly quest/rpg mechanics, good sense of mystery, best representation of night that ive seen in an rpg (the wilds become pitch black save for the glow of towns & cities on the horizon).
The Pawn System on GOG is still broken, likely never to be fixed.

Sorry, could you elaborate on that? What is broken with the pawn system?
