I've been wondering for years why gambling is illegal or well regulated in most states while "fantasy sports" has seemingly gotten a free ride.

Well, the first warning shot that this is about to end was fired on Thursday. DraftKings and FanDuel is no longer available to citizens in Nevada, and is most likely just the beginning.

One can debate whether gambling should be legal or illegal and if legal, whether and how much it should be regulated, but one can't make a logical argument that picking the winner between two teams in sports (sports betting) and picking the winning individuals in sports results (fantasy sports) aren't the same thing. If one is gambling, so is the other. If one is "skill based" then so is the other. It's about time they're treated the same. (Again, whatever "the same" may be, which is debatable).

The best part of the Nevada ruling was watching ESPNews report the breaking news that "daily fantasy sports" are now illegal in Nevada, only for there to be a segment on ESPNews, literally less than five minutes later, that was sponsored by DraftKings.

Not a regular commercial, but one of those segments where they give viewers advice about daily fantasy sports / gambling, while the DraftKings logo is displayed prominently on the screen and sometimes they even take the time to explain to viewers how DraftKings works.

The old saying about "having your cake and eating it, too" certainly applies here.

Interesting. Boston has been flooded with adverts for these sites, and I too wondered why they were getting a free pass.

Because Football... See Last Week's Tonight: Stadiums.

edit: I think... maybe it's a bit off, but no less horrifying.
