It's a hope, that is in vein - I know - but it'd be nice, where possible - to have a choice between grabbing a DOSBOX insatller of a (DOS game) and a SCUMMVM version.

Reason being is because ScummVM makes it so the save games are not compatible unless you use ScummVM, where as DOSBOX keeps it true to DOS and just emulates, so anyone can use the SAVE GAME files. This is mostly because I prefer DOSBOX miles and miles over ScummVM.

ScummVM also has a few other downsides to it, as well... But that's a discussion for a later time, unless folks begin to discuss it here too.

Other than making the installer file few kB/MB bigger, there's no reason why ScummVM installers couldn't have the original executable with them, making the game DosBox compatible.

I think that would be an ideal way to have it.

Then again, not counting the save game issue, and possibly someone wanting the authentic game experience with original files, I see no reason why to use DosBox if ScummVM version is available.
ScummVM uses less resources, can be run on more platforms, and requires less tweaking than DosBox.

Actually, that's a wonderful idea of - if they're going to make it ScummVM - include the original files anyway, so that DOSBOX is still an option for those that wish to play it that way.

Which games use ScummVM?

Don't a bunch of the Lucas Arts titles use it?

I would like to get the original Dos files too.
I kept various savegames for those versions.

Well, at least all of the Leisure Suit Larry games apparently seem to use ScummVM, for example. I was just about to play it - and I have a regular DOS save game, that's at MAX gambling (so I was basically going to play to that point, use my old DOS save to restore from that point once I had to gamble) - and realized it won't work because of the ScummVM.

I have the original files already, from the original game, and the CD "Collections" - so it's just a matter of me launching DOSBOX and doing it that way, in the end...

But for the games that I don't have the originals for, it'd be nice to have all the regular DOS files.

Someone on another forum had told me that the ScummVM version won't work with regular (save) games... and I was just about to play LSL1 and noticed GoG used ScummVM for the installer instead of DOSBOX... and, well, see my previous post. :)

I've added it to the Wishlist.

Was downloading a few games from GoG and disappointed to see that they had SCUMVM and still not containing all the original files.

If you're interested in the original files too - please rate (and comment, probably) on the Wishlist I set up for this here on GoG...

Remember that SCUMMVM is not only for MS-DOS games, it supports also many early Windows games that are quite hard to get to work on modern Windows systems. Like, IIRC, Myst-series games and Blade Runner.

But I guess this discussion was meant to be about MS-DOS games using SCUMMVM, yes? I admit I also prefer using DOSBox with DOS games because I am already familiar with MS-DOS, but I am fine with SCUMMVM too. I e.g. played the GOG 7th Guest which I believe is running on SCUMMVM, and it felt very authentic and shit.

Voted. Although not a big issue for most who will find ScummVM perfectly acceptable, GOG aren't exactly doing themselves a favor when the official GOG version ends up less functional and more restrictive than Abandonware sites. The goal for GOG there is to make the GOG version more desirable not less...
You know what would be even more preferable if GOG left the *.iso files in there too so for windows games with CD audio I could burn them to CD using an IMAGE with the ORIGINAL INSTALL I love using Original install discs!
Residual vm-0.3.1

Residual is for playing MYST III and grim fandango IF you have the original CD (and I do for GF!)

Demos to test with Residual VM Residual VM is also backwards compatible with Scummvm games and it is what I use!

There is another advantage for ScummVM: it allows to save at any point, even when it wouldn't be possible otherwise (for example, in the middle of a dialogue). It also usually allows more save slots than the original DOS games used to have, so you don't need to overwrite your older ones.

Here's another one: If you play windowed, you can resize the window by dragging the corners.

And a fourth: ScummVM autosaves, so you won't lose too much progress in case of an unexpected crash/power outage/cat pressing the wrong button.
